I do not know of anyone who would have the nerve to admit it if he or she were an atheist. This would be political suicide! I know one thing, around where I live, they probably would be run out of town! I would never consider voting for someone who does not believe in anything greater than himself. This would mean he could have free rein to do whatever he wanted without someday being accountable to anyone,(that is what he or she thinks!). Also, common sense is not a strength for most atheists! Who wants them running a Christian country where my Christian ancestors fought and died for our freedoms? Not I! Not anyone I know! God only knows what stuff they would dream up that would interfere with our right to worship? Forget it! I have one thing to say to any atheist that may run in the future...............GOD BLESS AMERICA!!

this seems to be more of an American thing
Mr. Bradlaugh was elected to the British house of commons in 1880 he was an atheist it coursed him tons of trouble for the next 8 years until the law was changed so that he could make an affirmation instead of an oath.
Svend Robinson has been a member of the Canadian house of commons from 1979 tell now dude is openly gay (came out in 1988) a socialist and an atheist

Openly? I'm pretty sure no. But have there been, or are there? No doubt about it--but in the present society, being openly atheist is political suicide. This society would sooner elect a black Jewish lesbian to office than an atheist.

bballsistaKT has the same particularly nasty, ignorant, bigoted and discriminatory view that the religious right has used to oppress the masses for centuries. Wouldn't want an atheist politician to threaten your obviously fragile faith.

Because the religious right control the vote. There has only been one president so far who was not WASP (White, Anglo-Saxon Protestant), that was JFK (he was catholic), because getting elected depends on appeasing this large proportion of the country.

Well we just got one. There have been atheists, maybe even presidents, but they have not been open about it. Pete Stark has recently come out that he is the first openly non-theist in history.

most people believe in God i think ... its better to profess that for a poltician even if they are atheist i think .. and perspectives in govt are coming from globalists views , making money, and an expansionist foreign policy that i see no correlation whatsoever with religeous viewpoints ...

What are you crazy?
Look at the history books - there have been many atheist politicians. Stalin, Castro, Lenin, Trotsky, Pol Pot, Mao... ring any bells?
