The Night of Jesus Arrest

Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.

Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?

They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.

Notice the last verse here?

As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.

They fell back in fear and dismay because Jesus revealed His deity, and revealed that He was absolutely in charge and that they could not arrest Him without His permission.

First let me tell you what is not taught in this Scripture. What is Not taught is that the Holy Spirit knocks saved believers backwards when some charlatan on TV uses crowd control techniques and waves his hand and people fall backwards.

The people who fell backwards were enemies of God. In the Bible falling backwards is a sign of God's disfavor and judgment. Apparently something like that happened when Jesus announced who He was.

Thanks for the song.

They obviously did not recognize him at that point. They took him for an angel. I know this because men always bowed to angels throughout the scriptures like Abraham did when the 3 men came to him.

Jesus also had the ability to transfigure according to the bible thus he was not looking like himself.

John's account is more reliable than the others because he was there.

"and fell to the ground" -- struck down by a power such as that which smote Saul of Tarsus and his companions to the earth (Ac 26:14). It was the glorious effulgence of the majesty of Christ which overpowered them. "This, occurring before His surrender, would show His power over His enemies, and so the freedom with which He gave Himself up"

The fact that they all fell back just shows the power of Christ. If He could cause all those men to fall with just His Words, it just heightens the awe of His sacrifice. Like how He said He could call legions of angels to save Him if He wanted..

God is awesome..

Jesus is aware of everything that was to happen to him. He committed himself to Gods plan.

Exodus 3
13 And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?

14 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.

15 And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.

He was, is, and forever shall be the I AM unto all generations.
