Great question. Thank you.

I can only say what I have experienced among my family. In our family we had Roman Catholics who were very active members in their parish. We have Muslims who are very peaceful and wonderful educators, Sufi, the spiritual and more cosmic form of Islam. We even have one Anglican Minister who just wanted to be different.

We have quite a few who are Druids of the old religion. We also have those of the Hindu religion. And we have many who are Earth worshipers, or Pagan. Actually, in our family, no matter the outer face of religion, we celebrate many of the old pagan rituals together. It is very difficult to explain how we do it, but I have a feeling we are a bit different from most clans.

The thing that first knocked my socks off was how, within our clan, we had NO problems in mixing and matching. I suppose we are so diverse in our beliefs because, unlike most clans, ours consists of refugees from other parts of the world and we are very tolerant because we are of the same blood, after all. Our lands have been in our line for over 250 years so we have that stability to offer those escaping the genocide facing so many of us.

Might I suggest, if you want to learn more about the Rrom, you check the answers of a Rrom who has been in Y/a for years. His name is JUST A GUY. He is leaving but he has left a wealth of gypsy lore in his answers.

If his clone shows up, you can tell it is not the real deal because Guy has a 55% Best Answer and Top Contributor status so that he can be differentiated from the many clones who try to imitate him. The clone is like 0% or not much better.

Here is the Url to his page. If you look through his Best Answers, you will learn much.

I asked him just now if he had any Answers particularly about religion but he cannot remember and his life is chaotic at the moment.

But I know you will learn much reading his answers. He is eloquent, polite and very good with words, because, in truth, most Rrom have an above average IQ given proper circumstances in which to grow.

Some do. Many have become Roman Catholic or Orthodox. Others are Muslim, or evangelical Protestant. There are a number of predominantly Romani churches. It often depends upon where they're living, as some will adopt the predominant religion of the area they're at. Also, there are their native beliefs.

Here's a link to one of many churches:

And here's an article on Roma religion (scroll down to "Beliefs and Practices of the Roma")

My grandmother was Catholic. She was a Hungarian gypsy. Came to America in 1912. To all those that said gypsies are dishonest, my grandmother never took anything in her life. She did not have to steal and did not believe in stealing. She worked as a chef for a living in New York!
