I took my puppy to the vet this afternoon, they squeezed us in thank goodness. It turns out she does have a urinary tract infection and the vet mentioned that she had crystals as well. My vet prescribed me Clavamox for the next two weeks.
I was hoping to hear a little bit more about crystals, and if she gets over the uti I was planning on giving her cranberry pills to help try to stop more uti's, is that a good idea?

Cranberry tablets will not harm your dog. The breeder we got our girls from recommends giving them cranberry tablets right from the start to help prevent infections from ever starting. If your pup is prone to infections, I am sure you will notice a difference once you start using the supplement regularly.

If your pup does not take the tablets easily, you could try adding 1 Tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to each gallon of her drinking water instead. This too will help keep her urinary tract in good health and stop bacteria from ever getting started.

Clavamox should clear up the infection. Do take the dog back to the vet if the symptoms appear at all worse in the mean time.

Crystals can form in urine and be caused by, or the cause of, infection. Certain breeds (Dalmatians) are more prediposed to developing crystals, athough diet is often a factor. What are you feeding her on?

There are many different types of crystals - urine in fact naturally has crystals in it, it's just that some types are not supposed to be in urine naturally and cause problems. Crystals are basically sediment formations from different waste products:

UTIs are worse for a male dog or cat because they have longer urethras which crystals can actually block up and cause serious problems, so be glad you have a female! Overweight can also be a contributing factor to urinary problems, keep the dog's weight controlled when she grows up so this doesn't add to the problem!

Did you ask your vet about the cranberry pills? Don't give your dog ANY medication or supplementation without checking with the vet first. I'm not sure about giving cranberry to dogs. Preventative treatment for UTIs in dogs is usually a diet change.

I would not give cranberry pills, I would only give what the doctor prescribes. My dog was on Clavamox for an infection and it cleared it right up.

Because your pup had crystals once, does not necessarily mean she will ever have them again. Are you feeding her a puppy chow? Plenty of water at all times? I would not give anything to your puppy without checking with your Veterinarian first. Some things that are great for people, can be deadly for animals. Have fun with that sweet puppy!

Clavamox is all you need. It works great. And if you were given the liquid kind with the eye dropper, the pets really don't mind the taste and it is easy to administer. Keep it in the refrigerator.

Always check with the vet before giving anything to a pet.
Lots of fresh water should be enough.
