used exercises were stretching of back muscles, hamstring, calf and planter fascia of foot. Also wall bar exercises (longitudinal traction). Beside improvement of back pain, i noticed that symptoms of sciatica (whatever the cause inflammation, or disc prolapse) nearly resolved and disappeared. What is the main mechanism of , specially sciatic nerve enchroachment by a disc, pain relief

I have RA and a few bulging discs, although I did not have sciatica pain to start with but acute onset lower right abdominal pain. St. Patrick's Day I stood up and BANG, acute onset lower right and left abdominal pain and sciatica pain. The thing about pain, believe it or not you get 'used' to it and yes I am was on morphine before St. Patrick's Day BANG so it did little to help, had to increase it for three days and then back to the normal daily dose. I had a Public Talk on Physiotherapy last month and I think the theory of back pain stated was the BEST I have heard.
The structures of the back are vertabra, discs, muscles, tendons and nerves, so say FIVE. If you hire five men to dig a big hole and four of those men are lying along the grass verge sunbathing, the one man digging has a lot of work to do and it will take him longer to dig the hole and he will be exhuasted faster than if all five men were digging the hole.
Likewise with the spine, if you are not using one part, say a muscle and we have several muscles to be used, then the body is relying on the vertbra and disc to maintain the upright stance, mobility, and so on. I will admit, while I have undertaken a lot of walking and had good core strength, the rest, legs, arms, tummy, shoulders were not muscle bound but atrophed. I started Pilates and after nine months, one one hour session a week and some exercise at home, the improvement was unbelivable. When I ended up in a wheelchair St.Patrick's Day everyone screamed 'Fat lot of good Pilates and Aqua Jogging have done for you!' I simply replied 'Well if I had NOT toned my muscles up, do you think I would be able to use a self propelled wheelchair?'
So people with Disc or Sciatica problems will tell you they REALLY do not want to exercise because they are scared of the PAIN! Therefore they are the group of men lying on the grass verge, allowing the one man to dig the hole. By explaining to them that they need to get all the men digging the hole, excercise build the muscle get the core strength going, they will assist and protect the back, thereby relieveing pain. That is what happens, exercise and strengthening the abdominal and back muscles keep the spine aligned and thereby reduce the pain. Four very long weeks using a wheelchair and I am up again and back doing my exercises, long may it last.

I've been battling sciatica for close to a decade, after a minor car accident, and I had tried everything the doc threw at mepills, injections, special mattresses This guide was extremely eye opening and within one week of the regimen you gave me I can barely feel any discomfort. You have no idea how much of a relief it is to be finally getting rid of a pain I've had to bear for so many years.

Sciatica Exercise Guide?

My wife has sciatica and two of those thermo pads. She keeps them in the freeze and uses one in the morning for an hour then one in the evening for an hour. Also if she is going to be sitting watching TV or using our home computer she sits on one of them (this is somewhat random and I doubt it makes much difference). She had one class on PT which showed her some exercises she could do and informed her about the ice packs. Before the class and the cold treatment she was getting a few minutes sleep a night, now she sleeps through the night. She told me the real secret was to develop the routine and sticking to it regardless of how good you feel. Basically if she skips a day (two applications of cold), it takes her about three days to get back to where she was before the skip. I'm not a sufferer myself but I can attest to her success. BTW: I do have a problem with upper back and shoulder pain. It is so intense that I feel certain it's a nerve problem. I went to a class in PT. They showed me a couple of things I could try. I have only needed it once since the class but a particular exercise / massage treatment stopped the pain dead and I was back to my normal, crusty old self, in less than half an hour. I consider that a BIG success as that shoulder pain would take me completely out of the game for days at a time before I learned those exercises. Having lived with pain for decades I can really relate. Try sitting on one of those thermo pads twice a day. You can get them at Wal Mart (I think for just under $10.00) If it helps you half as much as it helps my wife you will consider it money well spent. Good Luck GIMP

If you give exercise to sciatica patient pain may aggravate. If the pain disappears with exercise then it is not sciatica but attrophy of muscles or nerves.
Acupuncture is the only solution for sciatica, otherwise surgery.
Sometimes YOG (meditation) helps.
