I have a pair of little Sony SS-SR205's + matching center, and i had a pair of big old (REALLY OLD, 20 years or so) JVC SP-91's (big box 3-ways) BUT my mid-range blew in my big speakers and now i have no bass because i disconnected my Sp-91s. My planned budget is only ~$500, and all i really want is bass but i don't want to buy lower end stuff that will have to be replaced for better quality. Should i go with a new set of floors (And what kind, inc model & Brand) or should i get a different type of speaker?

I Also would prefer speakers that are tall and thin rather than short and wide

Hi . Have a look bellow there are some very good full range deep bass speakers :The KEFs have a good all round sound .So has the JBL.The Klipsch has a more brighter punchier sound. So it is best to have a listen before you by.Some of these speakers are a bit above your budget but you can get specials on ebay even refurbished ones at a fraction of the price. Hope you get some ideas . Cheers.

Yes, floor speakers are the best heres an awesome floor speaker that will give you awesome sound.

BIC Acoustech HT-75 Towers

(the reason there cheap is becuase they dont use dealers so theres no middleman price mark up trust me these are some good speakers they were made with HSU research.

with the money you have left over from your $500 budget i would suggest a powered sub. This will really give you the bass you want.

HSU STF-1

you might also like the definitive technology SM-350 bookshelf speakers they have a built in 8" sub so the speakers range is 30khz-26 Hz which is an awesome full range with near subsonic bass. i have heard these speakers before and let me tell you there awesome! and under $500 for the pair.

A good choice for floorstanding speakers that will kick out some serious BASS for the money is Cerwin Vega. They are also a top of the line brand as well so you know you are buying quality. I have used Cerwin Vega speakers for years and still get amazed to the bass they put out from even smaller speakers everyday. A good floorstanding model for you is the new VE-12F....it has a 12" woofer and is a 3 way application like you had before but with newer technology, bigger bass, and better looks. they are well under the 500 mark you suggested if you follow the link to a seller on ebay I found(very reputable) coming in at around 380 or so for a pair including shipping. they will handle up to 600 watts and come with a warranty. They are not discontinued and come brand new in the box. Hope this helps you, and trust me once you buy and hear Cerwin Vega, you will start to convert every speaker to cerwin vega, very inexpensive, and great sounding!

Some thing that you want to think about then is the Cerwin-vega it has 2 cast-frame, high-excursion 15" woofers, 6 1/2" mid-range speaker and 1" soft dome tweeter coupled to a proprietary waveguide. With 500 watts of power, 8 ohms impedance and 24Hz-20kHz frequency response, it delivers earth-shaking bass; 97dB sensitivity. However there about 400$ per speaker.

An alternate is this one Cerwin-Vega® (VE 15F) VE Series 15" 3-Way Tower Speaker
Price...$299.00

Or if you don't want a 15" sub you can get this Cerwin-Vega® (VE 12F) VE Series 12" 3-Way Tower Speaker
Price...$199.00

These are a few more i would recommend

Cerwin-Vega® (CLSC-15) 15" Classic 3-Way Tower Speaker
Price...$299.00

Cerwin-Vega® (CLSC-12) 12" Classic 3-Way Tower Speaker
Price...$239.00

Hope this helps you out

Well for about $600 you can get into some Paradigm Monitor 7, designed in Canada and a great speaker line and well built for the $$$. They offer price ranges for $109.00 to $5700.00. They would be a great upgrade over Sony, good electronics, but not really a home speaker company. I own some older Paradigm and they still sound good after 15 years.
