The style of beer is called Oktoberfest. It's a malty German lager that's brewed in the spring and lagered until the festival. It's made with pilsner and munich malt as the base malts.

They serve whatever they can sell, because its about money now...
But before the invention of refrigeration you could only make Ale (Lager is brewed at a lower temperature that need a refrigeration system...). So when the summer was coming you could not make beer for a few months (too Warm), so the clever German brewed as much as they could, storing it during summer... As soon as beer production was possible again (around October) the only thing you could do was to finish the stock of the beer stored for summer (usually a stronger beer to keep better)...
Oktoberfest Was born!!!

It could be anything that they put in a keg. It's up to who is serving it and where in the world you are as to what kind they get. Ask the next time If you want to know what kind you are drinking. I find after I am drunk it really doesn't matter. Just keep it coming.

depends, the U.S. sells all kinds at their fests. In germany, it may actually be called lager, i dont know.
