TKTS has 2 locations in NYC. They sell them for discount because they are tickets that have been unsold for performances that day.

The South Street Seaport Booth sells tickets to evening performances on the day of the performance, and matinee tickets for the next day.

TKTS in Times Square, it's across from TGIF's. The Times Square Booth sells day-of-performance tickets only.

You will never find tickets to very popular shows or recent shows like Lion King or Spam-A-Lot because they are usually sold out.

One last thing bring cash or traveler's cheques. TKTS does NOT take personal checks or credit cards.

Recommendations...see a popular show...they are usually worth the money.

Avenue Q...HILARIOUS, but its dark on Wednesdays

Blue Man Group --off broadway, lots of audience participation, an experience not just a show (my recommendation for the money)

Disney Shows (Lion King, Mary Poppins, etc)--usually expensive...but great costumes.

Forbidden Broadway--off Broadway spoof, but does not start again until June 2007 (very funny, its almost like seeing all the shows on Broadway in an hour and half.

Mamma Mia...if you like ABBA...you'll like Mamma Mia, if you don't know who ABBA is...you'll like Mamma Mia

Phantom...a Classic

Putnam County Spelling Bee-makes fun of those spelling bee kids you see on ESPN...if you're brave, they let 6 audience members participate in the spelling bee.

Spam-A-Lot, if you like Monty Python Search for the Holy Grail...this is funnier than the movie

Wicked--great show, one of my most favorites

TKTS is fine, but you have to get in line for a couple of hours and you will not know what you will be seeing until you get to the counter.
A better bet is to get those discount broadway tickets from www.nytix.com that offers the same tickets as TKTS, but in advance
