My female boxer just turned 8 weeks. She is very thin and I can see her bones. Is this normal? Is she underweight? She's 14.5 pounds and is about 13 inches tall.

I can't really tell from that picture - it is very cute by the way :-) Boxers are my fave.

You shouldn't be able to see a puppy's ribs. Are you feeding her puppy food? You should be until she's at least a year old.

Are you deworming her regularly? You should be using proper medication from the vets, not a shop. She should be wormed at 8 and 12 weeks, then monthly until she's 6 months old and 3 monthly thereafter. Worms is a common cause of skinniness and/or diarrhoea in pups.

Consult your vet if worried!

I have seen boxer pups where there have been Boxer puppies that have weighed 12 lbs. at 12 weeks and 20 pounds at 12 weeks.

puppy weight varies greatly.

If she's eating normally, if she's deficating and urinating normally, if she doesn't seem lethargic...

she's probably in that akward growing stage.

this is what medium and large breed dogs go through as they're developing. Just like we go through akward stages in our development, so do dogs. especially medium to large breeds. sometimes their bones grow faster then their muscle tone.

if you're concerned about odd behavior, or about the fact that she doesn't seem to be gaining, you should always talk to your vet.

Even if its just the akward stage- they can let you know for sure and calm your worries.

--- as for the photo, we'd need more of a full body picture from the side... she's all head in that photo- adorable as can be though! That face is too cute to resist. ---

--edit--

she's looking good. I am not noticing any signs of malnutrition or dehydration. (very visible bones, sinking and dry looking fur/skin)

Again- I think its an akward stage and she's fine- but when EVER you're concerned- its always a good idea to get a vet to tell you this

Judging from the picture it looks fine. As long as it continues to act and eat normally no worries. Some dogs are just small.

Did you have a general exam after you bought it? It is always a good idea to get that done after you buy a new puppy. The vet found worms in my doberman pup when I got him checked out the day after I bought him. Quick fix for what could have been tough on his little body.

She doesn't sound underweight to me. Its hard to say with the picture angle. It looks like she is posed funny, thus sticking out the rib cage to look like she's underweight. If your wondering take her to a vet. She looks fairly healthy to me but could have worms or other parasites to me. Boxers are normally fairly lean dogs so its really hard to say. If the hip bones are prominate than yes. Run your hands down her rib cage, if you feel bones without a bit of pressure she is underweight as well. Take her to the vet to have everything checked

Well---you shouldn't see bones on a puppy. You'll need to bring a stool sample to the veterinarian to have her checked for worms ---& then inform the breeder.

If you can see her bones (hip bones & ribs), then she is underweight.

At 8 weeks old, most puppies are VERY chubby.
