I have never seen a blue gill with a mouth big enough to eat a craw dad. They have very small mouths compared to other fish. Even the larger 1 lb and up Blue Gill can get only a size 10 hook in their mouths.

The best live bait I have found for Blue Gills is meal worms. They can be ordered on line or bought at tackle shops. The second best live bait is worms.

Blue Gills like weed beds and Brush so they have a place to hide when the Bass and other fish come for dinner. Remember Blue Gills place on the food chain is near the bottom, they are food to larger fish so they need someplace with protection.

The bigger blue gills stay at a depth just below your vision in the water. They can just barely see you, and you can't see them. My Grand Pa called it the tea cup level. This will change with water clarity. They will be deeper in clear water than in cloudy water.

Take something about the size of a tea cup and paint it white, tie it to a string and lower it over the side of the boat. When you can no longer see the tea cup, that is where the level where the fish are staying so you can't see them. Neither can birds of prey that eat fish.

Mark the string at water level, pull it up and measure how deep the cup was. This tells you how far down to put your bait.

I hope you catch a bucket full.

Machman4 is powerful... try going slightly deeper with a working laptop or workstation virus yet right that's a little greater to help. try fishing as on the factor of cover as achieveable (Stumps, bushes, Grass) interior the water. those systems function a twin purpose. a million. they help the smaller fish cover and avert the bigger predators. 2. they help the bigger fish, who're ambush predators, to place in look ahead to the fish they consume. Bluegill are no longer plenty distinctive. They feed the two in an opportunistic and predatory way. additionally, yet another good thank you to capture the bigger gills is to apply small stay minnows. on a bobber. in my opinion what I do is locate no longer something yet a working laptop or workstation virus on a hook, no weight or bobber, on an extremely gentle rod and reel with 4lb try line. this facilitates me to forged out farther and get to the place the bigger ones are. i've got yet to break the 1lb bluegill mark yet i'm close.

all bluegills love worms and crickets. To catch larger bluegills just put a larger peice of worm on.

Bass are the ones that love crayfish

I've always gone with bigger nightcrawlers and fished a bit deeper than where the smaller ones are biting at
