i have used crickets and i would say my experience says absolutely they love them, if you are fishing somewhere with a good largemouth population they go crazy for crickets, though first time i tried it problem i had with wild crickets i found in the basement of a cabin i was renting on a well populated bass lake is that often they are pretty soft bodied and hard to keep on a hook, so i would recomend getting commericaly avalible crickets like feeder crickets from a pet store or from a bait store rather than netting them in your basement, its been a number of years since i have done it but there are places on the body that you can hook them around the back where they still stay alive for a while, my experience is that bass love crickets, really its hard to go wrong with any live bait, im not sure though that anything ever beats worms for the broadest appeal to the most fish, i have even caught northern pike on worms, best bass bait imo will always be a real live worm on a jig hook. But crickets are likely not far behind as an effective bass bait, nice wriggling insect lots of action to attract a bass's attention. plus if you are presenting them on the surface of the water you can get some pretty spectacular strikes

tip in case you don't know it though if you have been fishing long likely you do, fish dont just strike out of hunger but do so also out of anger and territorialism, so lots of movement like a cricket makes is good

Bass are pretty opportunistic feeders. Theyll munch a cricket or an insect if its available but i wouldnt exactly fish for bass with them. Youde lose them to bluegills and other panfish stealing them off of your hooks more then catching bass. Id stick to using golden shiners if you want to catch bass. Thats thier favorite if you want to use live bait. They cant say no to a shiner.

Oh yeah, they'll eat em. I've caught some great big bass by freelining grasshoppers too. Just remember, bigger fish eat bigger baits.

Sounds to me like you need to take the time off to go fishing and find out ;-) Enjoy.
