My 6-year-old son's first grade class is planning a trip to both the children's museum and the zoo His teacher is providing t-shirts for the children. I am wanting to give the children something, but not sure what I could get them. Any ideas or suggestions? I would like to get them something that would show they are all in a group. I was thinking sunglasses for the zoo, but not sure about what I could get them for the museum trip. Also not sure if sunglasses are a good idea either. Any suggestions or ideas would be helpful!!!

Actually what my dad did when my brother and I were in school was print class t-shirts. He would take the teachers last name and come up with an animal that started with the same letter (i.e. Gary's Gorillas, Harris' Hornets, or Dahlstrom's Dolphins). He would also draw up a design of the animal as well. That worked well, everyone liked them, and he did it for the both of us up until our...6th grade years.

However, you might be strapped for time so you could try sunglasses for the zoo like you want. For the museum, umm...matching bracelets maybe. Kind of like the livestrong bracelets except personalized with the teacher's and school's names.

Those are some of the notable suggestions that would stand out so that you could tell the kids apart from other kids not with your son's group. The t-shirt is a fun idea and you might want to pitch the idea in the future.

I hope I could help you out in some way.

When my daughter was that young, all the parents had to purchase special T-shirts from the school that the kids wore on field trips to the zoo and museums. They were purple and they had some kind of design on them. When we went on a field trip, it was easy to spot on of our kids because of these shirts although I often thought the parents and teachers should have worn the same shirts in adult sizes, because if a child gets lost, it would make it a lot easier for him/her to spot one of us through a sea of adults.

At any rate, if you want to get them something to bring along, I would suggest water bottles or little plastic magnifying glasses on a string. The more they have to carry though, the more likely they are going to be dropping stuff and losing it.

What about a set of arm bands--you know like the livestrong bracelets, only another one for the kids. The t-shirts should be helpful enough to ID the kids. Just make sure that you're constantly counting the kids so you know how many there are at all times. Then, you'll know right away if one has wandered off. I wouldn't do sunglasses or hats or anything that the kids can easily take off because half will wear them and half won't.

Why do you have to buy the class anything? The teacher is buying T shirts because it will make it easier to keep tabs on her class at the zoo. Have you thought how the other children will feel when their mother didn't have enough money, or couldn't buy everyone a gift? The children do not need a gift from you. Contribute to their party fund when it is a special occasion and other parents are also providing something. Do something less conspicuous.

Get them a visor - that would work for the museum and zoo and it would be one item for them to keep track of rather than two.

Sun visors, hats. My daughter just went to the zoo with the whole kindergarten. They wore orange shirts and orange hats.

Back packs? Scarves (school colors and class logo)? Practical sunhats (again, with a distictive school logo)?
