If there were a weekly gathering of atheists/agnostics at a community center would you go? What type of activities would you expect?

maybe.... that is the only thing I miss about church is the social functions, group outings, movie nights, discussion groups, organized volunteering, etc. But you can do all that without the god stuff. Too bad there's too much variety among atheists to get us all to get along. As Dawkins said trying to organize atheists is like herding cats.

There are numerous "Churches of Freethought" around the country. Basically, the premise is that the primary draw of organized religion is the sense of belonging, and why should the theists have all the fun?!

Activities sometimes bash religion, but mostly they center on fighting government sanctioned or institutionalized religion (mostly Christian in U.S.) or other abrogations of religious freedom, or lecturers on any number of topics, often having nothing to do with religious issues. They also offer many of the social aspects of any social organization without the idealistic aspects.

No. I go to places and I honestly don't care what people believe...

And I honesly don't know what people that don't believe something would be doing together that they can't do with other people around.

From what I've seen here, it seems there are people that need some place to vent because they feel uncomfortable talking about their point of view. If they want that, that's ok.

Talk about the world. A cow is much bigger than a human. Is it really ok to kill it because the bible said so? Ok, yes, that's a bit of a joke.

In the old days we used to go on rampages and stuff. Ah, the killing, rape and mayhem the ungodly like us caused - the good ol' days.

We don't get to do that anymore, so we head to the local rec center, community center, or senior center and just chat. Or go out to the Laughlin River run for a little reminicsing.

A book-swap could be cool. Can't really think of activities, but I might meet some people who like similar activities, and who would be interesting to talk to. If we were really gluttons for punishment, we could start a grassroots movement in the community, and adopt a highway stretch. Guaranteed to get your car vandelized.

We do that almost every day anyway. It's called "Happy Hour."

Seriously, no, I don't think so. There are enough demands on my free time, and a "weekly community gathering" sounds too much like church. When you start gathering groups of folks like that, someone inevitably wants to be in charge, and start setting rules, and that's how religions got their start. No thanks.

I think the only pertinent common atheistic cause is to become an organized political force to remove the religious influence from our government.

There are still 7 states that you are prohibited being elected as Governor if you are an atheist.
Perhaps it's time we removed 'in god we trust' from our money.
It's definitely time to stop the religious people from taking away the rights of gay people, because of some bronze age text and their own insecurities.

there are many others-

YES!!! That's what we need!!! We need atheists and agnostics organizing together to find a way to BRING DOWN RELIGION. Only the ignorant would want sex and beer at a meeting like this: I would use this time to find a way to end this BS "religion" thing.

No, I wouldn't go. I already have little league practice twice a week, next it will be football practice 3 times a week, then it's hockey 6 days a week. I also volunteer about 10 hours a week at various shelters.

I wouldn't go near the place for fear my neighbors would discover I'm an atheist.
