The pools get emptied out and cleaned and refilled at night.

The cruise line website would have more information and examples of their day planner online (at least RCCL did).

They close on some nights to empty them so they can clean them. As for being quit at 3 that depends the first cruise i went on they had parties at the pool late a couple nights, The second cruise had nothing planned at the pool, But there are different clubs all over the boat open late, The cruise will have all kinds of things planned to do you will get a thing of what they have planned and where they will be held on the boat.

The cruise pools usually close at around 9 or 10 at night. Many times they have parties scheduled on the pool decks at night (depending on the cruise line). But, I've never seen a cruise pool open for 24 hours. Typically, the decks will be quiet at 3 in the morning. Only the casino and room service would be going at that time (and that depends on the cruise line too).

Carnival pools have set hours, and they close the pool and put a net over it at night.

Lots of fun stuff! We've been on Disney and Carnival, and both have special programs for kids & teens to let them get together (and away from parents) to do fun stuff like putt-putt, ping-pong, ice cream eating contests, computer game contests, etc. Every night there's a different play/musical/magic show to attend. Disney focuses more on kids, but most other cruise ships focus on grown-up fun like casinos, bars, and the like (stuff they can make money off of).

Still, bring a book or two. The days in port are busy enough because you're off the ship doing fun stuff. But you'll likely have one day at sea, and if you're not into the activities they have planned, you could get bored.

Depends a lot on the ship and how it was build, how old...
Not open 24 hours a day, sometimes closes while in port,
no diving allowed.
When its closed they put a net over it.
Check with the cruise line you are going.
