hi, hope your all having a good evening.
my gran came out of hospital 3 weeks ago after having an op. she has a large wound on her chest which she cannot get wet and im finding it difficult to wash her hair for her as leaning back and forward is difficult for her. she is too unwell to go to the hairdressers and i have been using dry shamppoo but its now in nead if a proper clean. any ideas would be gret. thanx

Call a nursing home or an assisted living facility and ask them how they handle that kind of situation. Or even a hospice that nurses come to you home they may have some ideas for you. Hope you find someone to answer your question there.

This is what I did for my big sis. She couldn't support herself sitting up in a chair. When she needed a good hair cleaning, I would get a dripping wet cloth, (cover up your gran's wound first) and get her hair completely wet.

Then use just a tad bit of regular shampoo and rub it through her hair and scalp really good with your fingers. If it doesn't suds up, don't worry. You're getting the worst of it this way.

Rinse the same way you wet her hair. Twice if you have too, just make sure you get all the shampoo.

This method works very well, especially if the hair is short, it just takes longer with longer hair.

It might sound a bit crazy but would it be possible to cover the wound? Maybe if you used surgical tape to put some clingfilm over it and then a towel that should keep it dry. Or if she can't lean back maybe have her lay on the bed/sofa with her head slightly over the edge and wash it in a bowl? They're my only ideas anyway. Good luck and I hope she gets better soon xx

Have her lie down in bed exept her head (let the head rest on a meshed support.) Put a large bucket under it and use another bucket for the clean water. You can use a towel plastic bag and tape it around the neck just to keep the chest area dry.

The only thing I could think of would be to have her sit on a plastic chair in the bath and, assuming you have a detachable shower spray, try to have her tilt her head a little back and wash it like that. It would be easier than her having to bend forwards or backwards over a sink.

You may need to cut Grandmas hair pretty short and then do the best you can with shampoo and wet towels. You really need to be careful with her incision because it can break open and then the problems will be just beginning.
