Some places, like coffeeshops for example, will allow people to display their artwork. That piece is not necessarily for sale, but there is artist info by the piece if someone wants to contact them and have them paint something in particular, or look at their other pieces. Would it be illegal to display in one of those coffeeshops a painting that someone had copied off of another painting, even if they weren't selling it? Would it be illegal to SELL a painting that was copied from another painting?

artist have borrowed images from other artists thgroughout history. If you're concerned about legal issues, perhaps you could title the picture "an impression of...(name the orig.painting) worst case scenario, if the artist discovers a picture "copied" from their own, they must have a court issue a "cease & desist" order -- unless this is going into a museum or professional gallery -- I wouldn't worry about it

It is not illegal to paint or sell a picture that was copied from another painting so long as the artist who actually painted the copy clearly and legibly writes his name on the painting and does not forge the name of the original painter or leaves off the artist's name in an attempt to make inference to the original artist. To copy an original painting, whether by painting an original or making a print of it and use the original artist's name, you would need to get permission from the artist or the artist's estate. Thus, if the artist is obeying these rules, whatever place is displaying the art should not have a problem with displaying it regardless of whether it's for sale or not. However, if the place of business knows that the painting is a forgery, they have an obligation not to display it and even to go so far as to report it.

Legal bud is just hemp, which Im sure you know is just marijuana with a very low thc content, meaning that smoking it will do nothing because there is no thc, which is the active ingredient that makes people high. Sure it looks just like it, but its completely useless. I dont know what you mean by legal bud, because there is no bud that is legal in the united states, federal law says its illegal. What I assumed you meant was bud that you see in magazines like high times, which is hemp, not other plants not grass, not lettuce. It is useless if you're trying to get high, but can be used industrially for many things. And for the girl that went on about how its a conspiracy, it is, but that wasnt the question.

It is legal.

As long as it is an original work, made by hand and not intended to 'impersonate' another artist you can do pretty much what ever you want.

In art you can only protect your work, not the idea behind it. Let's say you painted a rose...Everybody else that would paint a rose would infrige your copyright...well you can not enforce that so.. the law draws the line at 'photocopying' and forging a signature..

I'm assuming the painting you copied is a recent one, and is eligible for copyright protection. If that is so, then it was illegal for you to copy it. (This wouldn't depend on whether it was for sale or not.) It would also be illegal to display the copy. (Again, regardless of whether the copy is for sale.) And, it's illegal to sell the copy. You win the trifecta.
