can on the surf the internet normally, but when it trys to go on software update, it comes up that it it is not able to access the internet and that i need to check my settings!
I am pc tecy but haven't got a clue about mac's!!!!
any clues???

If you connect to the Internet through a proxy server such as in an office network, you may not be able to use Software Update. Just search for your updates manually at www.apple.com/support and download the installers for your updates. If you can't figure out what updates you need, find a friend who has a more direct connection to the Internet and then use Software Update.

I think you'll find your software is way out of date. I'm on OSX 10.4.9. Are you using Safari to surf??
