Yep. My mum can be a really good cook when she wants to but she very wants to. I remember when I was still living at home and had come home from work and really wanted a nice dinner and she had made burger and chips (both brought frozen and she just chucked them in the deep fat fryer). I love it now that I live with my partner. He loves properly cooked, home made food as much as me and so we also have lovely dinners.
Occasionally though my mum will get off her backside and cook a nice meal but it is rare.

My mum was a great cook, but she had a very small repertoire. Her idea of a curry was to make a Lancashire hot pot and add a very small pinch of curry powder to it.
I'm much more adventurous, but then I've also travelled the world. I can cook the normal roast and two veg, Christmas/Thanksgiving Turkey, most Italian dishes apart from pizza, Greek/Turkish cuisine, 'Indian' dishes from Pakistan to Sri Lanka, Thai and Chinese dishes from the whole of China (not just Canton).
Oh, I forgot, I can also cook for vegetarian and vegan guests, but that stretches the imagination.

I am now better than my mum as she is now 80+ and finds it difficult to put together a good meal without help.
When she was my age she would run rings around my ability now.
I do cook for her when she visits, or if I am visiting her and if she tells me I have done well, I know I have.
Her praise is genuine even if I have chased her out from under my feet and insist on doing some thing my way.

My mom was a wonderful cook... I learned from her and know I cook as well. We didn't always cook the exact same things, of course, but I learned from her how to cook with my heart... every meal is important. My daughter cooks the same way... has a natural ability to create new and interesting things and she's a vegetarian. Prooves we don't need meat to be gourmets.

It's a myth, we all cook something good, my mom's cooking was good but she used to cook all veg to death and then throw the cooking water away leaving veg that was fit for the bin, I hated it, we now have partly cooked veg and it is the best pert of the dinner ant good to pick at later.

A lot of people. Mom was a good cook, just only a couple of her dishes stand out. My grandma at 91 though could marvel a chef, and she'd put those snotty chefs in their place too!
