It is appropriate that you bring nothing except your lovely presence...but something small and thoughtful would be a nice touch. Don't go overboard though.

First of all, this is an interesting question for the Politics.

However, to answer your question, as a man in his 40's, you don't need to get me anything if we go out on a date. If anything, traditionally it would be me that should get you something.

If you really wanted to get me something, though, it wouldn't matter what you got me. I would just be thankful that you thought of me. If you want more than that, then you might want to consider what this man likes. If you know he's a baseball fan, buy him a couple of tickets to next week's game. If he is a metro, buy him some cologne. Do something that indicates you've been noticing him, and I think that will make an impression.

The best thing u can give to an older guy on a first date is a nice greeting card saying that u like him and wanna get to know him further. For us mature guys its the feeling that makes it more special then the gift. Its not about monetary value

Believe me... the only gift required it the joy of spending quality time with you. And for those here that are judging you, as long as you are of age (at least 18) then date anyone you wish. There are many younger women that are attracted to old men... And there is nothing wrong with that.

Just be sure that he is wanting to spend time with you for the right reasons. I have dated younger women. They are much more fun to be with than women my age. They are not angry and jaded. They do not have a herd of kids and looking for a daddy for them. There are many positives for both of you if this works out.

So, as I said. Don't worry about gifts. Your charm is the only gift needed!

*Edit:

I actually just looked at your profile.... you said in another post that you are 17 and he is 46 and a teacher. First... until you are 18... stay away. Also, it is inappropriate and unethical for him to show any interest in you. I think you need to think long and hard before you try to cultivate this as it is probably not in your best interest to pursue him.

Wren, as a 48 year old man, I would LOVE roses, or even almost any arrange of flowers. No I'm not gay, it's the thought of kindness and effort you put into such an act. Wine is nice too, but roses are something we don't get. As a matter of fact, I've never gotten roses and now I'm hurt, thinking of all the roses I've bought. You sound like a LOVELY person.

If I understand your question, you are under 21 and going on a date with a gentleman in his 40s or 50s, correct? If so, don't bring anything. I'm in my 40s and it would be plenty enough just being with a lovely younger woman (as long as she was at least 18) that wanted to be with me.

Wren:

Give him head in the car as soon as he picks you up. Being older, it will take him a while to be ready again. Then you two have time for a nice dinner and conversation before you spread for him in the car once more. Good girl.

It doesn't matter, we will get what we want later in the date or there won't be a second date.

Don't listen to pip, just bang his brains out and he'll buy you all kinds of stuff you can't afford for yourself.

The gift of a hot body is always a good one.
