I am a Lutheran and am certainly glad that I am.
Of all the Christian denominations, Lutherans (as Luther taught) stand only on Scripture for the truth. We also stand on grace and faith as the only means of salvation.
At a time when religion had gone crazy with Rome selling indulgences, fanatics running around "in the Spirit", and muslims threatening boarders, Lutheranism emerged as simply declaring that sinners can find grace and forgiveness at the cross of Jesus. This forgiveness comes with the power of the Word and means of grace.
For the stand on Scripture alone and its conncetion with the historical church (liturgical), I too am proud to wear the label of "Lutheran".

I was raised Lutheran, but now I'm atheist.
Their services were just a bunch of rote material, repeatedly recited as if everyone were automatons.
Not that I believed the rubbish contained within the rote recitations after awhile anyway.
Funny thing is, my mother still tells me all the church feud drama going on every week, who's backstabbing who and whatnot. I laugh and get a kick out of it. It's like watching my own personal Jerry Springer show.
Martin Luther had some hangups, you know. For one thing, he hated Jews with a passion.
Some have theorized that Hitler capitalized upon the latent anti-Semitism in Luther's work to encourage the persecution of Jews in Nazi Germany.

I'm Catholic but i am in a Lutheran (ELCA)/ R Catholic Bible study and I find that the Lutherans and Catholics have so much in common and that Lutherans have alot to be pround of (as do Catholics) from hymnody to liturgy to social service to mission work to church architecture to Bible translations. Of course, for a non Lutheran the divisions can be confusing:ELCA,LC-MS.Wis Syn,etc.

I am a former LCMS member. I recently withdrew membership. My beliefs deviated with that of the church years ago during my study of religion. At the present, I have no intention of joining another congregation or faith. I accept and respect members of all faith traditions as well as those without. :-)
