Most turtles eat lettuce, carrots (chopped), and other green plant-like foods. Or there are always pellets you can get from the pet store. Good Luck =].

Relax. You are treating your turtle as if it were a mammal, not a reptile. It does no harm for a turtle to go for weeks or even months without eating. When the temperature goes down, so does the metabolic rate and the need for food. Hibernating turtles go all winter without eating and survive very well. The washcloth would help with a mammal, which produces its heat metabolically. It keeps the turtle colder because the turtle takes its heat from its surroundings. Keeping small fishes in the water is a good idea. That way, the turtle can go after a snack any time it wants one. If you start heating the tank, it will probably be sooner rather than later. I have never heated my turtle tanks. If the turtle goes all winter without eating, I don't worry. What I do is await the first thunderstorm of the spring. Then I go out and collect the earthworms that have been flooded out of their burrows. No turtle can resist a wiggling earthworm.

I really would not advise you to feed worms to your tortoise like the previous answerer. My tortoise can only eat Romaine lettuce as this is the only lettuce that had lots of water and vitamins unlike all other lettuce which are just 99% water. Pellets are fine, but I would also never use this as the sole diet for a tortoise. As for 'setting it free' this is one of the most stupide ideas I have ever read. In today's urban world, the tortoise coudl easily stray onto a road, or come across a dog and be treated like a toy. Just feed it plenty of greens and change the food and find out what it likes. I've had my tortoise 3 years now and every year he changes what he likes to eat. At the moment it's rocket, romaine lettuce and brocolli. Hope that helps!

most of his habbitat should be made up of water... did you do that? well....... the iceburg lettuce is what's making him or her not want to eat.... it is a VERY addictive plant for MOST animals, especially turtles. (BUT if this is all it's eating that is ok, just not GOOD.) I've had turttles for along time.... try feeding him canned corn cornels.... sliced green beans, fresh spinach, diced tomatos, grapes (sliced in half), banna squares, apple slices, dried bananas, dried apples, and red leaf romaine lettuce. Give him or her some rainbow mealworms if he wants them, but if not don't worry about it really. Make sure he or she is getting PLENTY of sunlight and swimming regularly. also... has it been with other turtles? it may be egg bound, so make sure it has plenty of soil and places to borrow under neath the soil so it can hide.
you may want to try to boil an egg and give him or her some of the hard biled egg yolk. this will give them their animal protien it needs.. and if it won't eat it plain, then cruble some and put it on the lettuce that it eats.

What they eat will depend on the species and sometimes age. See this link under "care sheets" to know what the type you have should be eating: http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/
The most common reasons for them not to be eating is too low of a temperature, or a parasite problem. If the temperature of the water and basking area check out okay, you might need a visit to a turtle vet.

Try some worms or fresh veggies. Mixes of lettuce are good for them. Also it depends on what kind of turtle it is. Try looking it up online or calling your local pet food supply. They might be able to help. If worse comes to worse, let it go. It might be in distress do to its environment and will probably eventually die if you don't. You shouldn't have a pet turtle anyway if you don't know what the hell it eats.
good luck
