Actually "country fried" would be seasoned, floured and fried without the egg dip. As you know, "chicken fried" is flour, dip in egg and flour again to get a thick crust.

RE:
What is the difference between chicken fried steak and country fried steak?
Aren't they both cuts of (generally) beef, pounded thin and battered and fried the way fried chicken would normally be, and then served with gravy?

A variety of recipes for chicken fried steak and country fried steak
Chicken-fried or country-fried steak is usually made with round steak, tenderized then dipped in an egg and milk mixture, then dredged in seasoned flour or bread crumbs. The coated steak is then fried in hot fat until the coating is crispy and browned, much like fried chicken. A milk gravy is often made to be served with the steak, along with mashed potatoes.
Country fried steak can also be made by coating the tenderized steaks with seasoned flour or crumbs. Smothered steak, another version, is fried then simmered in gravy, which makes a tougher cut of meat even more tender.
According to The Dictionary of American Food and Drink by John Mariani, the term "chicken-fried steak" first appeared in print in the year 1952. It has long been a favorite dish in the South, Midwest, and Southwest United States.

The chicken fried steak is pounded beef, seasoned and battered (or floured, dipped in eggs and then breadcrumbs and then fried in a pan) and country fried steak is non battered beef. The reason they call it the different names, is to let you know that one is battered and one is not.
Country fried steak is usually with sauteed onions and perhaps mushrooms. The gravy used is usually white on the C.F., steaks.--brown, if any at all, on the beef.

I have heard the two used interchangeably. Gotta have the gravy or its just not chicken fried, or country fried steak. The meat is usually round steak, pounded really thin to make it nice and tender.
