i have a studio flat in sheffield that i'd like to convert to a one bedroom via a simple stud wall.

do i have to apply to get planning permission?

if yes - how and where?

i'd like specifics not "call your local planning office"

Assuming that the building is not "Listed" then you do not require planning permission for solely internal alterations. However, depending on the extent of the works you may need Building Regulations approval. This is determined by whether you are intending to provide, for example, an en suite bathroom, a new window or removing any part of the existing structure. That you will have to check with the Building Control Section of the Council for your own protection. Just a quick extra word if you are intending to put in a new window which is in part an external alteration - the type of building and whether any planning conditions were imposed when it was built, will dictate whether you will need planning permission for that element of your proposal. It is impossible to give you a definitive answer on this and only the council will hold any relevant details relating to your specific property.

Have your builder sing a promissory notice for the music of 10 circumstances the quantity he's charging you, pointing out that in case you do want permissions you get the money. Then see if he nonetheless believes it won't want making plans permission.....

Best ring the council not sure what council Sheffield is, just in case because if you do need it but don't they can make you put it back as it was.

you will not need planning for that ..you are well inside the law ..make sure you don't screw into any pipes or cables ..and you must soundproof the stud wall

Make sure if it's a bedroom that you have a window in it.
