I've checked my textbook and it's unavailable, and the online translation is wrong as usual. Does anyone with some knowledge of Spanish know what the Spanish translation for that would be?

I think it depends on the context. If you're there in Barcelona you could translate it as Esto es Barcelona, (pause) la ciudad más grande en/de España. It doesn't matter if city and Barcelona are both fem words in Spanish. I think you don't need the fem dem pronoun here since you're looking at it, you are there showing it to sb: hei have a look Esto (this piece of land) es Barcelona. Esto (neuter pronoun) If you are not there it would be better to use the fem demonstrative pronoun because of the gender concord rule. Whether you think the word city has been ommited or not the pronoun would be "esta" since Barcelona ends in A. (fem word) I think the problem here is the length of the pause (comma). It seems stupid but the longer it is, the more you believe you're in Barcelona... that would explain the different answers you've been given. esto /esta
