Wish you had quoted a source for the information.
I find it difficult to believe that any church would knowingly let a convicted sex offender serve as the head of a congregation. The law suites that would result from that would destroy the church in no time. I very seriously doubt that the article said churches were letting sex offenders lead the services.
Or was the article only talking about allowing convicted offensers to attend church services? Legally, a church is unable to keep a person out of a service as long as that person is not disruptive or do not do anything illegal on the premises. The exception would be if the person has a court order preventing them from being near a person or persons in the congregation, or if the church were to get a court order against them. Legally, the church can not keep them out. That would be an issue to take up with your legislature, not your church.
But why would you want to keep them out? Hopefully if they are going back to church they are making some kind of a honest effort to reform themselves, to overcome their sins, and prevent future offenses. How can that be wrong?

Better in the church than on the playground,I always say.
Besides,as a Christian,I believe in the power of Jah.
Of course I'm not stupid because God gave me a brain so I'm not going to allow the sex offender to play Santa at the church social(the truth be known my congregation doesn't celebrate Christmas but that's a whole other topic.)But forgiveness is a big thing with Christians.
Precautions will be necessary,of course.

Most churches do not turn anyone away. A sex offender can attend church. The majority of churches do NOT leave anyone alone with the children of the church unless there has been a background check on the person. A sex offender in church would not be left alone with any children.

Which church? Different churches have different bodies that make decisions... As for this making the news? Sex offenders have been in churches for a very long time.
Maybe you are confused, this doesn't sound like something that just made the news, aside from the fact that the story would have been about a specific church, not just "hey churches are letting sex offenders in now".

Actually this has already been happening. One ex-sex-offender came before the congregation and confessed his sin. He was allowed to attend this particular church but with limitations that were set. For example, he could not work with the children or be in their proximity. Someone would have to be with him at all times while in church.

You say let them in the congregation and then you say they will be preaching....so are they part of the congregation or are they clergy?
You can't scan everyone's profile when joining a church, but you can and should if they are going to be anywhere with the children by themselves...like working with a youth group.

Sure, but they will not let you preach if you have been divorced. I applied and preached at a place, and they all wanted me to be the new preacher. Then, they heard that I had been divorced. So the owner (yes small church) asked me if my ex was still alive. If so, I could get the job. I asked, "Would you like her dead, so I could preach for you?" She hung up. - sorry for being off point.

Would Jesus turn away a sex offender? I don't think so. Shouldn't you live your life as close as possible to Jesus' and show the same forgiveness that he did for other people's sins.

Churches are desperate to bolster their congregations. They'll accept any low life -today it's sex offenders tomorrow it'll be double glazing salesmen.

You mean as opposed to just allowing them to serve as the priests?
