1) Download IrfanView: a freeware & excellent image viewer that has a batch processing facility, just like the one you need:

http://www.irfanview.com (install the plugins too: very handy)

2) Next, open IrfanView and choose FILE, BATCH CONVERSION/RENAME.

3) In the dialog that appears, search for the directory where your images reside. Click "Add all" to add the images to the bach.

4) Click the button "Set Advanced Option"

5) Make sure you tick "RESIZE" and set the new size. You can either set the long side to 1024, or the short side to 768 pixels.

6) tick the "Preserve aspect ratio" check box.

7) Use any other settings in this dialog. For example there's an option to add a standard text to all the pictures: great for watermarking. Or enhance the pictures using sharpen, gamma correction, etcetera.

7) Click OK

8) You're back in the previous window. Make sure you set a) the output directory, and b) the output format. You may set specific output options for a given format: just click the "Options" button.

9) After carefully checking the options (in most cases you DO NOT want to overwrite the existing, original files), click the "Start" button.

Let it grind away, and after a while all your images were converted.

PS Although I have Photoshop in my array of tools, these kind of quick conversions, I find, are actually more convenient to do in IrfanView!

If you have Photoshop you can setup a script to do that automatically. You use FILE AUTOMATE and then choose the options for Photoshop to do on the chosen photos.
