Also, if you have your child "Dedicated", do you choose Godparents? I belong to an Evangelical Christian church. I have been waiting for an answer from my pastor but he apparently is very busy. Thank you!

A baptism is supposedly about "washing away" the sin of the baby, though I personally believe that sin is a choice & therefore infants cannot be sinners... That is why there are Baby dedications in some churches that don't believe in infant Baptism for whatever reasons.
Baby dedications are for the most part The Parents deicating their baby to God because HE is thebaby's true Father & Promising to raise them in their faith so the baby will grow to Love & Honor God (& people, hopefully) the way that Jesus taught us to.
When choosing GodParents it should be someone you believe is really going to try to remind that child throughout their lives to Honor God the way they were originally intended to.

Churches that do not believe in baptizing babies will do a dedication instead. As my pastor says, it's just a "dry baptism".

You can choose godparents if you want. Most churches will allow you have them, and other family, stand up with you for the dedication. But usually there is no formal certificate or anything issues stating who the godparents are.

Hi there...I was raised in a pentecostal church all my life so hopefully I can help out a little. First of all when Mary and Joseph took Jesus to the church they had him dedicated and gave him to God. This is a commitment of the parents basically that they will honor God by giving this child to him and by raising him the way God wants.....When Jesus was older he went to John the Baptist and he had him baptize him. He also said do as I do. At this point he was total submerged in water in the river of Jordon.(Mathew 3)With Baptism it is a commitment with you and God. It is a washing away of your sins. I think that is why some churches do not baptize babies. At this time the individual can make a decision on their faith as well and where they want to go. It is almost a decision that should be made by the individual not a parent or guardian to decide.

Bapstism is accepting God into your life and as your savior. Usually done as an infant.

A dedication is when you are old enough to understand what it all means you decide to dedicate your life to the word of God. A dedication is voluntary when you are older. It is a way of saying I know what God did for us and I dedicate myself to the religion. Many Catholics will not do dedications if they feel they do not understand or agree with everything. They will hold off for the next year to answer questions.

Godparents are usually chosen at the baptism.

God gave you that child. In dedication you are just acknowedging that That child belongs to God not you and he has just given it to you for a time to take care of ... In the dedication your give the child back to God and Promise him that you will raise it In the ways of the Lord...Some churches do this for babies But when the child is old enough to understand and makes the choice on its own it is saved and goes through baptism

Whether or not you choose to have godparents is up to you.

Churches that believe in adult baptism typically have a baby dedication ceremony where the parents promise to raise that child up in a manner that pleases God. When the child decides for themselves to worship God they become baptized.

Churches that believe in infant baptism, typically have the parents promise to raise their child in a manner that pleases God. When they decided for themselves to worship God they join the church through a ceremony often called Profession of Faith or Confirmation.

Some Churchs (based on the bible) believe you need to choose to be baptized. As an infant you can not make that choice so they have dedications. The church prays for the infant and parents and agree to help raise the child in a healthy Christian environment.

Baptism is an outward sign . We do it to show others our belief in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. We choose this. A baby (or young child) wouldn't be able to make this decision. A dedication is a charge to the parents to raise the child properly. Later that child will need to accept Jesus when he is older, and be baptized if he desires.
No, you don't need Godparents.

we have baby dedications where the parents go in front of the church and the pastor charges them with being the best parents they can be and to raise their child up in the way God would have them to. A Baptism is what you want to do after you have personally accepted Jesus as your Savior then you will want to follow him in babtism. I hope this helps.
