You shouldn't. Don't you remember the Chiquita song?

"I'm Chiquita banana and I've come to say - Bananas have to ripen in a certain way- When they are fleck'd with brown and have a golden hue - Bananas taste the best and are best for you - You can put them in a salad - You can put them in a pie-aye - Any way you want to eat them - It's impossible to beat them - But, bananas like the climate of the very, very tropical equator - So you should never put bananas in the refrigerator."

No such thing as Ice Boxes anymore. Yes, you can put bananas in the refrigerator, but they will turn black quickly.

I find that many times when I bring bananas home from the market, I've brought those pesky little fruit flies with them.

You can dodge that bullet by storing them in the fridge, but they do turn black very quickly. I would love to know whether the fruit suffers the same fate as the peel in this situation.

You should never keep your bananas in the ice box. They will turn brown and get all mushy. They also ripen faster when you put them close to other ripe fruit. You can freeze them with chocolate on them though or in other recipes.

I do not recommend putting bananas in the ice box....they will turn black immediately.

Yeah. The skins will turn brown and black, but refrigeration makes the ripening process go into slow-motion. (This is universal technique you can use for all produce.)

There's a myth that refrigeration somehow makes the bananas go bad, because of the color-change of the skin, but this is only a myth.

Yes, if you are going to cook with them or use them to make smoothies! I freeze them all the time-peel them first, and cut them into chunks. When they're peeled first they don't get really brown, but you can only use them for smoothies/drinks (use em frozen) or baking since they are mushy when thawed.

If you are going to use them for baking later, you can put them in the freezer. I do it all the time and use them later for banana breads and muffins.
