I frequently hold the door for strangers. Pay it forward, and every little bit helps.

I have a couple of answers for you.

1) Some people are just rude.

2) As we become easily distracted and self-absorbed because of our pressures and responsibilities, we sacrifice thoughtfulness and compassion in order to get more things done.

3) Men were primarily holding doors open for women. After the women's movement, when we stood up and said, "Don't treat me like a lesser being incapable of managing the weight of a door!" we scared/angered men out of being thoughtful.

Finally, lead by example. Just be a kind person and hold doors open for others. Maybe your good deed will be paid forward and make the world a nicer place.

I hold doors open for women.

For a guy, though, I walk through first and just sort of bounce or prop the door open for sec to let him get a hold of it. It's kind of creepy to have a guy hold the door open for another guy. I hate it if some guy does that -- it's like, dude, just walk through already, I'll make it on my own.

I'm sexist, though, so I hold doors for women. I walk with them on the inside (farther from the road). I shake hands with less force. I stand when a woman enters the room and when I greet a woman.

That's a great question..too bad there's really no logical answer. =\ I mean, it really depends on the kind of person you are. If you're the gentlemen and you hold the door open for people. then so be it. But, there's others that aren't so it shouldn't bother you, but from my personal opinon I'd say people should hold the door open for thers because it shows that you have class, and that you're respectful, not to mention that it shows you were raised with great morals. =)

I try to hold doors for people and most people hold a door for me. I guess it is just the age of individualism and automatic doors (can't tell you how many times I have walked into a door that I thought was automatic, but wasn't).

There are a few good, well-mannered people out there who open doors.Too many people do not understand that good manners are small, inconsequential sacrifices that are made to help everyone's lives move on a little more smoothly. But,too many of us humans are very selfish, boorish people who just forgot how to behave,or were never taught basic good manners.

I am a Baby Boomer;I did not ask for this world. Why did I learn all the basics of etiquette and others of my generation did not? Some of the blame must be set on the shoulders of parents who are more concerned with being "friends" with their children and not parents. Some of the blame must be personal responsibility and a lack of good standards of behavior.People are always in a rush to get somewhere,a rush to get nowhere, but a rush nonetheless,so they are not looking out for others who may require assistance.

People don't do a lot of courteous things any more because the baby boomers saw to it that the rules of old fashioned decency have been destroyed. Every generation before them was wrong, and they took it upon themselves to change the rules and make them more "progressive".

This is the society they wanted. If you're a boomer, it's the society you asked for.

12-yr old children dressing as sluts and giving BJ's instead of kisses. Children wanting to kill each other. Adults blaming everyone but themselves. Rules against having fun, even if you're not bothering anyone, but especially if anyone, just one single person, is "offended". Everything is bad for you. Everyone has an agenda. No one is it to be trusted. No one deserves respect. Anyone who disagrees with you is wrong and should be shouted down and shoved aside. Etc.

A great progressive society the boomers gave us, isn't it?

So what are you prepared to do about it?

Nothing.

I don't know where you live, but here in Texas, 9 times out 10, people always open the door for others.

You are so right. It is a rare occurence these days.

I think folks are too wrapped up in their own selves. Or they are just rude.

I try to hold doors for whomever is behind me, and I always thank those who show this common courtesy.

Worse than the one's who don't hold the door are the ones YOU hold the door for who don't even acknowledge....that's when I say very loudly YOU'RE WELCOME....

I DO!! **Raising hand**

Unless I'm in a really, REALLY bad mood.

If someone is approaching the door behind me or from the opposite direction in front of me, I'll hold it open for them.
