Is it the same as a restaurant? Usually runs $12.

Standard is a dollar per piece of luggage if you have them, for rides it is optional but as with restaurants which is 15%, everything depends on the quality of service.

For a $12 ride - a $1 tip is good, $2 if you want to be extra generous.

tips are usually 10 to 15% of the bill or fare even for taxis and restaurants, lots of them make their living out of it.

i think that it depends on how far and how much the price i would normally would pay the cab driver about 15% of the price

You can tip if you want but if you take a cab a lot, I wouldn't. They already make fares plus wages and some are even on comission.
