The best gifts are tailored to the specific person. Like, if that person likes coffee or tea, a nice mug with those items would be appropriate. Do you know of a book or CD the person would enjoy? Maybe a certain type of candy? Like, I know my Dad likes black licorice. Sometimes I'll just get him some. It doesn't cost much, but he appreciates it and it shows I was thinking of him.
The gifts I like the best are not the most expensive; it's the ones that say, "I took the time to think about what you would like."

Flowers, in any shape, but fresh flowers when you meet someone and printed (cards) for postal thanks. Or make them yourself from ribbon, paper string or marzipan.
Small sweets or chocolates.
Little figurines for something special.
