First of all, call the airline you're flying with -- this mostly applies on international routes, but some don't charge you a fee for changing your date and you might be able to do it as simply as that. (Singapore Airlines, for instance, is one that doesn't charge a fee, but there are likely others.)

For most domestic flights, however, you probably WILL be charged a fee for changing your dates -- and really there isn't any way to avoid that; you really sort of have to suck it up. As you mentioned in your question, the average fee to change a non-refundable or restricted domestic ticket is $100, but it can actually be higher, depending on the airline. Also, if there's a difference in price between the flight you want and the flight you're booked on, you'll have to pay the difference too. (A word of advice: do this directly through the airline, and not through the travel agency you booked with. Travel agencies charge another fee, on top of the fee you're already paying to change your ticket. You can save about $30 by calling the airline yourself.)

Be warned that some tickets do not allow any changes, even with a fee. Some types of changes are not allowed, even if the ticket allows changes. Here are some general restrictions:

* You cannot change the name on an airline ticket or give the ticket to someone else to use.
* You cannot exchange a ticket from one airline to another.
* Some airlines will not allow the ticket to be reused if the original reservation was not cancelled within their designated timeframe

(If you happened to have booked with Travelocity, you can use the Change Fee Calculator in the "My Stuff" section to see how much it will cost to change your ticket; otherwise, you'll have to call the airline directly to find out how much it'll cost.)

Your final option is to cancel your Saturday ticket and buy a whole new one for Sunday -- Travelocity's policy, for instance, is that if it's been less than 24 hours since you booked your flight, you can cancel it (and then buy a new one on the day you want to fly). You should check and see if whichever agency you bought your ticket with has the same (or a similar) policy. You might just be in luck.

Otherwise, I'm afraid, there's nothing you can really do about avoiding the fee, aside from paying it if you think it's worth it, or just resigning yourself to leaving on Saturday rather than Sunday.

Hope this helps!

If you bought a restricted ticket (which is almost always what you get unless you specifically ask for one with no restrictions, and they cost a lot more) you can't change the reservation without paying the fee. Sorry!

PS. you can only go standby for an earlier flight, not a later flight, and not a flight on a totally different day.

Well, I actually did this last year with no charge. Caveat; The airline emailed me telling me that my flight was changed to another flight like an hour later or so and I sort of made a stink saying that I had a business trip and the time they gave me was unacceptable. They then asked me what would work better and I suggested a totally different airport and day (FLL vs RSW). They were fine with that and there was no fees of any kind. I guess lesson here is that if the airline changes it to begin with then you can always try to change it at that point.

If the flights are within 24 hours of each other you can ask to go standby on another flight on the same carrier.
If you're on NWA you can confirm your standby status for $50.
If you are at a smaller city I would recommend going to the airport and asking a counter person to help you.
They have the power:)

If you booked through an agency you can ask them to call their airline representative and get a waiver for the $100 penalty.

Good Luck.

If that is your outbound flight - you are penalized the 100.00 change fee plus any fare difference. If its changing your return - yes it is 100.00 ( but if the class of service you are booked in is not available, it can still be the penalty plus any fare difference. Unfortunately, the airlines are quite strict
and rarely waive the change fees. I would call the airline 1st to verify the change fee amount - and then decide if its worth it - you could ask if they would waive it - but I highly doubt it.

Good luck

The ONLY way you can do this is if you recently made the reservations, they give you a "courtesy cancel" within the first few hours after you reserve flights.

Erin, standby's are only for earlier flights, not later flights on a different day.

I think that your best option would be to look for day where you can find a cheaper fare, so that the fare difference makes up for the $100 penalty. These days, airlines are seldom willing to levy these fees. I'm platinum on American, for instance. I needed to cancel an award ticket, and they charged me $100 to give me back my miles...
