Bring a book and/or some magazines and some music and don't forget to bring your own food on the plane. Even if they sell it they always run out. And when you pack, plan your outfits well so that everything coordinates and wear it all more than once so you don't have a bunch of pain-in-the-butt big bags to lug around. (I can travel for two weeks on a carry-on sized suitcase!)
Your flight should be only a few hours, it'll be over before you know it. Great traveling knick-knacks I personally can't live without? Hm. A water bottle and a pack of gum!
have fun.

Patients! It's not the flight but the airport that is the hardest part. I fly every week for work and know of what I speak. As for the flight, just bring a book or magazine and you'll be okay. Montana to California is not such a long flight (try New York to Turkey).

If you are on short flights, they may not have snacks (happened to me a few weeks ago) or drinks.
Buy a drink after going through security.
Bring your own headphones if you have any for longer flights.
Bring an iPod or some music player, a book, a small travel game that can be played while on a plane.

Bach Rescue Remedy to keep you calm. Moisturisers, hand cream, soothing eye drops (check you can take them with you, no idea about restrictions on liquids and creams in your part of the world). Mints to chew. And, as others have said, books and magazines. Portable DVD player, CD player, i-pods? Thick socks to wear so you can slip your shoes off. If you wear lenses take your glasses with you (the cabins are very dry).
And have a lovely holiday! You certainly plan ahead.

some change, sometimes you need to pay for a pair of headphones to listen to music or hear whats going on in the flight movie.
