For many people I know fuel prices are costing them a quarter to a third of their weekly income. They have no alternet way to get to work. So now they are falling behind in providing for their families. This is not the way to reach the American dream. Or is that only for the wealthy?

Why won't President Bush step in as President Kennedy did with the steel companies when they were in the same situation.

Do you really want the Government controlling big businesses?Thats whats going on in Russia and other countries.By the way, anyone can invest in oil companies,it's not against the law.Unfortunately,we are all in the same boat here,so we as consumers have to start thinking for ourselves. If oil prices come down, people will just start driving bigger cars more. The automakers still make them, and people are still buying them.If we all were to stop buying large vehicles that most of us do not need, and concentrate on small, fuel efficient vehicles,we could help ourselves, carpooling if possible, group errands,telecommuting,etc....I drive between 29 to 35k a year doing elec.service work.By using a small Nissan p/up,I keep my costs low.I am 6'2" and fit just fine. Also,a standard shift gets me 27.1mpg and 24.5mpg fully loaded down.If people drive standard, they will get better gas mileage too.I had a Brit point out to me that Americans got lazy with their driving. In Europe, you rarely find automatic transmissions, and they have been paying a lot more for gas for a long time.Remember the gas out on May 15,2007.All internet users are urged not to buy any gas on May 15...The last time this was done gas prices dropped 30 cents in 1 day. Please tell everyone you know not to buy gas on this day...We have to start sending messages as united consumers instead of prisioners.....Ask anyone who shops....Dont you love it when prices drop and you get a great bargain??? Good luck to you all..

Hate to tell you this, but the oil companies have the whole civilized world over the barrel -- both literally and figuratively. It's just as bad up here in Canada. For years, now, reporters have been collecting data to PROVE that the oil companies operate together as a cartel to fix the prices, and the government just hems and haws and does nothing. Big Oil is just too powerful for any government to take on, even the President of the United States. And as other readers have pointed out, he comes from oil stock, in more ways than one!

The only PERMANENT solution to this problem is for all of us to give up our love affair with the car. Good luck on that one!

As for the American dream, the news media in most of the industrialized countries have documented the way that the rich are getting richer AND fewer, while the poor are getting poorer AND more numerous. The American/Canadian dream is as dead as the dream of any other country you care to name!

Sorry to be so blunt, but we are all in this mess together, and nationality has nothing to do with it since Big Oil is the most thoroughly international of all industries!

You almost caused me to choke! George W. Bush is the reason the gas prices are what they are. You have to be kidding that the son of the son of an oil man is going to do anything except cash the royalty checks.
Now for some simple arithmetic.
I drive seventy five miles a day to and from work. gasoline here sells for $3.48 a gallon. My car gets 25 miles per gallon. My cost for fuel is $10.44 a day. To average even 25% you would have to earn less than $41.76 a day. Minimum wage is $6.75 an hour. That equals $54.00 a day. Most minimum wage earners don't drive and have families.
Using my criteria I would think that you would have to drive a gas hog, a long ways, and earn the minimum wage in order to meet what you are stating.

Were you alive in the late 70s/early 80s? The experience of that time should be enough to remind people to not let the government interfere. I'd rather pay more than not be able to get any at all.

He won't. Bush and Cheney both have a lot of their investments in the oil industry.

They don't have the problem. We do. Nothing will get done. They're making too much money on their investments.
