Pier 1 and Crate & Barrel are the places my boys liked at that age. In fact, they still do and most are in their late teens and early 20s now.
As a mom, I have a lot of problems with Ikea. The furniture is not just inexpensive, it's very poorly made. If I'm spending money on something with no warranty and no chance of lasting more than a year with a teenage boy, it's not going to sit well.

I think Ikea is the best furniture store hands down. colors are crazy. design is crazy. its sooooo cool there. try it!
