I'm getting some good replies on my other question, but people keep suggesting Disney animated films even though I asked them not to. (We love them but are tired of them.) Hopefully I'll avoid them altogether with this question. Plus, I'm trying the parent section rather than the movie section. So let's hear it, parents!

Which family movies that are NOT animated do you like to watch with your kids?

I forgot to mention that my children are 3 and 4 years old, and we need some suggestions for our "movie night" at home.

I have a 5 and a 6 year old so this might be a bit too much, although my 5 year old was watching nature shows at 3, he loves animals. We orderd the planet earth series from the science channel, ( I think, maybe it was discovery ) and we watch them to learn about the world and the animals, under the ocean, on ice and even in the air. They are fantastic. They ask questions and are so interested. They will watch two hours and we will have to tell them it is time to go to bed. Also Marry Poppins, and Puff the magic Dragon, Swiss Family Robinson, Casper, and Flipper. Those are great movies with a bit of color and magic to keep little ones interested. Good luck

Honey I Shrunk the Kids
Mary Poppins
The Parent Trap
Cats & Dogs
Spy Kids
George of the Jungle
Rookie of the Year
Homeward Bound

I hear you about animated, but at such a young age there isn't a huge catalog of movies for kids without animation.

Most regular Disney stuff turns my stomach, but we have been more than happy with Pixar movies. Not as sappy and dreadful as the plain old Disney film. And Pixar was it's own entity before Disney bought them and is no longer owned by Disney. Both Toy Story movies are great, as is A Bugs Life and Nemo. The Pixar folks know that moms & dads are going to watch the movies and they have not been disappointing to us at all.

Best of luck to you.

You would be surprised at how much small kids like old movies. They won't know that they're not "cool" until they hit junior high.

How about:
Meet Me in St. Louis
Wizard of Oz
any of the Andy Hardy movies
any of the Ma & Pa Kettle movies (hilarious!)
Auntie Mame
Bringing Up Baby (hilarious beyond belief)
Holiday
Born Yesterday
Some Like It Hot (they'll never understand the dirty parts)
The Long Trailer
Little Women (any version)
The Yearling
National Velvet
The Black Stallion
Fly Away Home (be careful, the mom dies at the beginning)
The Band Wagon
Singing in the Rain
Annie Get Your Gun
Guys & Dolls
The Music Man (everyone should see this perfect film)
Oklahoma!

There aren't a lot of kid movies that aren't animated... but you could try things like Heidi or the Sound of Music. Kids love musicals. There's also the Secret Garden. Miracle on 34th st. A Christmas Story (even if it's not that time of year). Sesame Street specials.

My 3 year old really likes Best of the Electric Company on DVD. It's nostagia for me (did you know Morgan Freeman and Bill Cosby were in it?) and entertaining for him. AND educational. And there's enough discs and episodes that we don't have to watch the same ones over and over.

I have 3 sons, my oldest is 7 and the twins are 4 and they love the movies "How to Eat Fried Worms" and "The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl". They also enjoy the movie "The Sandlot" (the original), but it does have 2 minor curse words in it. I hope these suggestions will help.

We liked "winged migration" for sick days especially. This is a documentary style nature movie, but our kids like to point out the different birds, etc. It's not nearly as entertaining for them as Blue's Clues, but it's pretty kid-friendly and good for when you need a break from the animated stuff. It's very, VERY relaxing!
