try wearing a rubber band on your wrist and every time you have the inclination to pull your hair snap the rubber band. my friend had the same problem and that worked for her pretty well.

When I was your age I started doing the same thing, I think in my case it is definitely stress-related...My sister had just been murdered and my parents were going through a trial seperation, and I think that's what brought it on. I think just finding stress-relieving outlets helps alot, whether it is doing something you love more often (hobbies, etc,) to practicing yoga or meditation. A therapist might not be a bad idea either. After about 6 months I was able to stop, and hadn't had any desire to pull my hair for about 16 years. Just recently I have begun again, my husband got laid off from work and I had a miscarriage--I am 99% sure that this added stress is the trigger that makes me want to do it, so I am making a concentrated effort to make my life as stress-free as possible right now. Hope this helps.

I know someone close who used to do that. She also had obsessive-compulsive disorder. I think you should research OCD, and see if maybe that is the underlying problem. She went to therapy and took medication for a little while, the therapy doing the most good. Pretty much, what she was told to do was try to stop doing these things a little bit at a time. Thinning hair was a lot of pressure too... maybe you can transfer this bad habit with another less-destructive one. I've done that before, and I had OCD too. Hope this helps!!!

Typically, obsessive-compulsive type activities are not cognitvely based in their source. Meaning, there is not much thought behind their basis, ergo, you are not going to be able to "talk" yourself out of something that is nearly second nature to you, (i.e. fingernail biting or ritualistic cleaning.) Those behaviors usually become so in-grained into a person's pattern of behavior, they typically don't even realize when or why they do it, much less understand how to stop them.

Since most of the time these things are brought about due to anxiety and stress, my suggestion would be to talk to your physician, therapist, etc. about some anti-anxiety medication, at least as a start. Once you lower the level of anxiety/stress you are currenlty experiencing, then you can cognitively go back and try to determine what your triggering factors are when you do this, and minimize your exposure to them.

For example, a former cocaine user may not be able to be around razor blades, due to them being associated with the ritual or preparing for drug use, and thereby "triggering" the desire for the drug itself. Its possible that something you are being exposed to on a daily basis is causing a similar trigger in you.

Of course, always consult a medical professional before starting, modifying, or terminating any type of medication regimen....

Well, you could cut your hair reeeally short... like a buzz cut... it will take a while to grow back... and maybe not having hair to pull for a while will help you kick the habit.

Also, being that that is an official "disorder," you might contact your city or county's MHMR center and see if you can get an adjusted rate to see a therapist... I know there are some good meds out there for obssessive compulsive disorders such as the one you mention.

Plus, you will be charged only according to how much you can afford.

i'm sorry to verify which you have this affliction it relatively is a bad habit and extremely complicated to earnings administration over. it relatively is not as in case you may leave your hair in the back of as you circulate positioned so which you would be able to no longer take it with you and pull it! you will need help with this. A therapist in CBT (cognitive behavioural treatment) would be waiting that can assist you with this yet there are a number of diverse different remedies which could additionally probably make it easier to whether it relies upon upon what's obtainable the place you're - and doubtless how long the waiting record is. i could hate to point a wig yet in actuality is one way of combating you merely pulling your hair all the time. The wig will make you think of two times and in public you may no longer merely whip it off and initiate pulling. below the scalp and hair can start to regrow under cover. If it has have been given relatively undesirable and you have bald patches you may get hair sewn lower back in as you recuperate whether it expenditures lots. Do you pull without thinking approximately it? if so the wig is the suited way forward to end you. whether at nighttime tape your palms at the same time previously you circulate to sleep. it works yet once you employ the two palms you will need somebody to tape the alternative hand. verify you may open and close the bathing room door in case you pick for the time of the nighttime! Ask approximately counselling on the college, college or uni once you're nonetheless a student or on the wellbeing care expert. stable success

I have a client that has that same problem and she has pulled out a large part of her hair on the top of her head. There is no way that she could go out in public like that so she started wearing wigs. This also prevented her from pulling and twisting on the hair on her scalp instead she pulls the wig hair.
