We had a lab mix who would remove the squeaker from any toy and then was done with it forever. Tennis balls were her favorite toy, and the cheap ones were just fine with her. Our 1 year old Golden Retriever granddog is very rough on toys. Tennis balls go from new to total destruction in less than an hour with him. He can totally destruct almost any squeaky or stuffed thing in a few minutes. This includes the cheap stuff as well as the sturdy-looking and expensive dog things we have bought at Tractor Supply. Price does not really seem to matter. The only thing I have found so far that he can't destroy are the Kong toys, he has several and so far all are holding up fine. He also chews on many other household objects, but has a special fondness for pencils and crayons, so we have to police the area constantly. Our 8 month old German Shepherd is much more gentle on toys. She loves soft things, and has her own blanky and pillow that she carries and mouths for comfort without chewing. They do get soggy, though! She also likes stuffed animals and the Kongs. She will work a long time on a Kong filled with peanut butter. We had a greyhound who loved and carried a big stuffed cat. He would position it just right to lay his head on, and he carried it almost everywhere he went.

I have a 4 month old German Shepard that if I don't keep toys for her, she will chew on my furniture, shoes and pull clothes out of the dirty clothes bin.

I too was appalled at the cost of dog toys especially at Wal-mart. One day I was doing some browsing at the dollar store (Called Dollar Tree) and found nice dog toys for $1 each. Try the dollar stores. I also check all toys regardless where I purchase them from to make sure there are not any small parts that can come off and choke my pup.

Your local WalMart or pharmacy or even grocery store has toys-- BUT make sure they are not small enough to be swallowed (choking hazard) and make sure there are no little eyes or noses or tails on them that can also be swallowed and cause damage to the pets throat or stomach.

If it's a dog toy, make sure it's sturdy enough to last more than a day (I bought a big toy for a Chihuaha once and saw it get shredded in 15 minutes)

My little dog loves small stuffed animals. I was paying a fortune at PetSmart for them and he would chew them up in less than a month. I started going to the Salvation Army store and buying them for less than 50 cents. You can also try Goodwill or any store of that nature that takes in and resells used goods. You can also use baby toys for dogs sometimes too.

Drop by your local tennis court/club for "dead" tennis balls - they're usually free (or very cheap).

Make them - Get 1/4 yard of "fleece" from the fabric store. Tear into 4" strips and tie knots in them - or tie into a big knot-ball or braid them into a "rope" for a good "tug" toy.

Your local thrift store - or yard sale - may be a good source for old stuffed toys - clip any eyes or other danglies off so Fido won't chew/swallow them.

And then, there's the ultimate special toy - an almost empty jar of peanut butter! My Sweet Baby Blue (a pitbull) will play and sniff and lick and toss this for hours.

I buy lengths of nylon rope at the hardware store, cut it into 10" sections, and wrap it in electrical tape leaving a little frayed end. It works very well for my Great Dane. They cost less than $1 each. I also always check the clearance section at my local pet store. I can buy plush squeaky toys for less than $2.

Is there a Dollar Store near you? Dollartree? etc.
WalMart has racquet balls 3/$2.50, in the sporting goods area; my dogs love those and they are for some reason sturdier than anything from PetSmart or Petco.
A co-worker gets stuffed animals for her dogs, at the thrift store; she removes hard eyes and noses, but her dogs mostly carry them around, they are not chewers & shredders...
Bear in mind that you usually get what you pay for; cheap toys often fall apart more quickly and you need to watch that the dog does not ingest anything.

Rope toys and other cheap toys can be really harmful for your dog. They can become lodged in intestines and eventually cause serious damage. Maybe you should consider spending a little extra for the safety of your pet. Its the responsible thing to do.

Buy heck! You can make some pretty cool toys that they love. You can take a 20oz plastic soda bottle and put some small rocks in it and put the top back on. They love that. You can also take an old pair of socks and put a tennis ball in the sock and tie it in a knot. They like that too.

Look on the clearance sections at any store, Target, Wal Mart....I have found awesome toys for less that way.
