gluttony is a sin with many ramifications...so, why do churches promote this unhealthy lifestyle? Why are so many people who call themselves Christians overweight?

Won't overweight people go to hell, unless they turn from their wicked sinful ways and get healthy? If someone dies and are still fat...isn't this a sign that they never turn from this sin?

Of course, there may be some that are fat because of health reasons...but, most is because of no exercise and gluttony.

INteresting you should mention that... I recently read an article in Health Magazine that said that religious people are more likely to be obese, with Baptists coming as the most obese of religious people. The reason?? FOOD was the centerpiece of the gatherings...

Yes, thats gluttony.

So, the religious are just as hell bound as us non-religious....whats new about that??

Dave - who are you to give levels to sin? Your God sees sin in only one light - as being wrong. So, being gay is just as bad as murder - or lying, or being a fat slob.

I'm not sure that gluttony is encouraged. However, gluttony is dangerous because some foods expand your appetite to unneccesary levels. If you need to lose weight, pray that you do and repent your sin of gluttony. Nobody will live a sin-free life. And, even a fat person can get to heaven.

Well, that's an interesting question... I have to say though as a non-Christian looking in, isn't one of Jesus Christ's most famous and emulated moments at a dinner table? You could argue that they are simply emulating their messiah in the name of fellowship and community.
Also, being of the Pagan tradition, many of our get-togethers also revolve around food and while we do also agree that it is sinful to over-indulge, we find a fellowship in celebrating the mutual need from the Earth and gratefulness in life that our ecosystem is still supporting us.
Beyond religion, I don't particularly believe anyone who isn't fat has the right to point fingers at the obese. Any of the cases of obesity I've seen that aren't due to health involve someone who is unhappy and troubled, and we ALL cope with disharmony in our own way. Its the job of the community to be a part of the support system and try to help them come back into balance, not to judge and exile, no matter what you believe.

You sir, are absolutely right that many times the churches seem to encourage gluttony. Yes this is wrong put people also need to have self control. I cannot speak for other but I can certainly speak for myself and I am responsible with how I treat my body before God. I am not overweight, as a matter of fact some say i'm underweight. I am a vegan and eat 2 meals a day. I feel healthy and to God I give the praise. I try to teach others of diet reform as this is what is taking many to an early grave sad to say. "As in the days of Noah" remember? "Eating and drinking"... too much of these enfeebles and numbs the mental faculties depriving you of true understanding of the spiritual things. This is why many will perish in gluttony and ignorance - they will not understand the spiritual things. Not only this, but overeating causes all sorts of health issues.

There indeed is a strong correlation between what we eat and our spiritual life. It is possible to live a sinless life but we have to be real connected to Christ and part of this is self-control. As there is a lack in this area, many professed christians are commiting all sorts of sins and dishonor God; but it is not every christian that is doing this. There may be few, but they exist - those who will by no means dishonor God's name.

Oh eating is good, its a pleasure really but its up to us to have self control. We cannot be blaming the churches as much as we cannot fully blame fast food places for selling their junk - which by the way, for some insane reason people love to eat! It is partly their fault yet it is also ours but we will stand before God as individuals. We need to get ourselves straight before God and stop worrying about what the world engages in or not.

When was the last time someone invited YOU to a church potluck? I'm not sure what church culture you are refering to, but my experience has been that potlucks are few and far between. That said, there is a robust difference between being presented with an assortment of food and being encouraged to overindulge.

Secondly, I think you have a misconception about those who go to hell. Hell is for good people. It's also for the philanthropist, the artist, the doctor and the humanitarian. In fact, it's for anyone who is not born again, period. There are no good people.

Lastly, it is the apostate catholic church of the middle ages that gave us this doctrine. They also taught, quite contrary to scripture, that a priest was not allowed to mary. The Bible is quite clear that one of the marks of a false teacher is that he or she forbids marriage and commands to abstain from meats which God created to be received with thanksgiving.

The Kingdom of God DOES NOT consist of rules: touch not, taste not, handle not, but of power and love and self-control.

we've such particularly some foodstuff at our church, and particularly some have made your same assertion. they say they do it for the fellowship. we don't attend maximum because of the fact my husband is a diabetic, yet there are various that do no longer attend because of the fact they are too fairly tempted to consume meals they do no longer regularly consume, and picture that potlucks grant too a lot of that temptation. Gluttony is taken heavily, whether that's often (a minimum of in our church) between the chubbiest people who runs the kitchen. by some ability it style of feels we ought to constantly do greater to help that guy or woman stay with wholesome meals, fairly than sell fellowship by foodstuff. I consider you.

everyone sins. if they get skinny and are no longer tempted to eat, they will be attractive and be more tempted to have sex. you sin no matter what. you can't help it. you were born in to it. the church prolly means good and does not realize they are tempting people to sin. but it is not through wisdom that you are saved. it is in the foolishness of the words preached by those who hope to save you that god finds pleasing. god just wants you to love and if you accidently sin while trying to love then god will see it as good anyway. if the glory of god is increased through my lie, why am i still called a sinner? give your church a break. you can't stop sinning

Why would the availability of a variety of food be considered as purposeful encouragement of gluttony?

Are supermarkets to blame for gluttony, as well?

Although it is tempting for some to blame sinful behavior on others (e.g., gluttonous behavior is due to the availbility of potluck dinners rather than my own personal sin), the fact remains that we are personally responsible for our own choices (sinful or otherwise).

Being a child of God has no weight requirement. The only requirement is confessing Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.

Because religion is built for screw up’s, they give you Rules and regulations, “10 commandments” and what not, and there is always the opportunity for confessions redemption, repent.. People are taught that god is all forgiving.. If you utterly mean and believe when you repent and take the lord in to your hart when you are standing at the pearly gates that you will be permitted in.

What kind of church do you go to? The only meal we have at my parish is the Eucharist.
