my 18 month old throws an absolute fit when it's time for his diaper changes. He writhes and flails and screams and rolls away as hard as he can to avoid them. I have to try to pin him down with one arm and/or legs to change him with the other. We have had poop everywhere once it's over and I have to clean it up. I can't figure out what he hates so bad- he tries to get away before I even get him to lie down. Sometimes he lies for it in front of the tv but even that doesn't always work anymore. Please help!! I can't do this 5 times a day anymore.

Oh MY GOD! I thought I was the ONLY one who had this problem! My daughter cries and repeats over and over "I know" (it's what we say to her when she has to do something she doesn't like. We say it to soothe her, it's kinda cute that she says it too) I hate changing her diaper because of it! We try to calm her down. Usually if my hubby and i do it together (one of us to change the diapie and the other to talk to her and tickle her tummy) it goes by pretty quick and painless. But other than that there is no calming her down. It sounds like someone is killing her...lol.

You definitely need to start thinking about potty training. It isn't too early, as long as you realize that it might take a while. If he really hates the diapers then he may actually like using the potty.

Involve him in the process. Ask him to help you and get a diaper. Let him know you will be changing him and need his help. Make a big deal out of it. Then give him the remote to occupy him while changing. I also sing to my kids while changing them and that comes them down.

Normal behavior of an 18 month old!

He probably isn't ready for potty but is ready to help.

the only thing that worked for me was the song if your happy and you know it clap your hands it worked and my son kept his hands out of the poo as he was too busy clapping. to start with though i had to go through the usual with him running away and me forcing him down on the mat, then as soon as he was down i started singing he wasn't expecting that he thought i was going to do the usual contortionist act while trying to get his diaper off and it must have thrown him so now we have (mostly ) tear free changing times, as to why they do it i think they are just trying to assert some kind of Independence as my son would also have a fit if i tried to make him do pretty much anything.

unm, have you tried giving him toys to play with? or even singing to him, making funny faces??

does he have diaper rash and it hurts his bottom??

i can tell you that my neice is about the same age and she pitches a fit too...well, not so much a fit, but just tosses and turns so much that it makes it VERY hard to change her.

my son is doing the same thing, but i'm lucky...i just give him a new toy, like his thermometer or his booger sucker, a bottle of lotion(stuff close by that he doesn't normally get to play with) and he's entertained long enough to change him!

good luck!

Potty train him. And in the mean time slap his butt and tell him to stop it.
