Don't you agree that the base of education itself, i.e. approach towards critical reasoning is lacking in their heads right from their childhood.

This is a major disease in USA for sure.

Me. I agree with you. Considering the number of people who doubt evolution, notwithstanding that it has been established science for a hundred years (and is now a proven fact), it is clear that the educational system is deficient.

It gets my vote - some people calling themselves Christians on this site must be a real embarrassment to those with brains and education.

On the other hand, the vast majority of people, of whatever religious viewpoint, who post to this site usually display a complete inability to reason, critically or otherwise.

Nor is it just a problem for the USA.

Like what would you suggest? Eliminating any parental contact? That has been tried by several tyrants, didn't stop people from believing in God at all. Or maybe you are suggesting we Christians are uneducated, or incorrectly educated? I don't know how to deal with that absurd assumption, my 4.0 cumulative at the USAFA only got me 4th in my class, and the three above me were all part of the same Bible study I attended. Maybe I will understand it next January when my MBA is granted. Thanks for you uneducated opinion on education.

I think just about everybody needs better schooling-not just Christians but Atheists and Muslims and agnostics also,IMHO. I agree that more attention to critical reasoning is needed in US schools, especially public schools, and moral/ethical reasoning also needs to be cultivated.

"Faith" is actually "taking leave of your senses". In any other field, obtaining knowledge is based on examining the environment, gathering real data, using reason and logic to form conclusions based on that data and then testing your conclusions for accuracy. In religion, you are told to throw all that out and just have 'faith' (in other words, forget reason and just believe what you are told). With this system (faith) as a beginning, how can you hope to raise children that will ever learn what "critical reasoning" means?

Which Christians are you referring to?

I'm Episcopalian, and we're a very educated lot. Heck, the woman who sits two pews in front of me at church was the first person to discover the link between monkies and humans in the first transmission of AIDS.

In my church we have authors, scientists, doctors, lawyers, and graduate degrees galore.

So speak for yourself.

*Raises hand*

The ignorance of basic, *fundamental* science that so many creationists display is disheartening. It seems they are on board with Marin Luther when he said:

"But since the devil's bride, Reason, that pretty whore, comes in and thinks she's wise, and what she says, what she thinks, is from the Holy Spirit, who can help us, then? Not judges, not doctors, no king or emperor, because [reason] is the Devil's greatest whore."

Doesn't that sentiment sound familiar?

I think your overgeneralization overshadows and nearly invalidates the valid point you make.

Most of my college professors were theists, predominantly Christians, including my biology professors, one of my physics professors, and one of my chemistry professors. They knew their science and they knew their faith. They would acknowledge they were making a leap of faith, but beyond that leap, they used logic and critical thought to analyze what the consequences of their faith were.

The correlation between intelligence, education, and religiousity is not R^2=1.000... it's closer to R^2=0.950. That leaves rather a bit of wiggle room for idiotic and uneducated atheists and genius PhD theists.

The U.S. gets more screwed up as it become less Christian.

Atheists only understand the physical world and make no attempt to understand the spiritual world. Some Christians only understand the other half of our existance.

Wisdom lie in understanding both the spiritual and physical world.

I think that not just Christians, but atheists also need better schooling.

Everyone, not just in the US, but everywhere needs better, more comprehensive and life-long education.
