Romans 5:13 for before the law was given, sin was in the world. But sin is not taken into account when there is no law.

When we read the ten commandments a person that is not hardened to sin will realize that they have broken all of them in some form or another.

The ten commandments were put in place by God to show what holiness is. It is a reflection of who God is. At the same time it shows us how far we are from perfection and that we need Jesus as our savior.

Moses was having a hard time controlling his people because they couldn't agree on a set of rules. The commandments were given for our benefit.

Like a father who tells his kids not to play in the street or you'll get hit. Breaking them does not mean that you go to hell. It means that you will (figuratively) get hit by a truck.

The Commandments where for order and guidance. They were also based a lot of Egyptian faith. 42 Declarations of Purity or the Negative Confession. Its an interesting read. :)

They were given as the first establishment of the Law by which people were to abide by in their daily lives to maintain their salvation from Seder to Seder, since repentance, water baptism, and sanctification had not been advented yet.

The Ten Commandments were given to prove that we can't get to heaven on our own merit.

They are the most basic rules that man should live by, because the people of the time were out of control. They encompass the worst-case scenario of what we might do and require us to use our integrity to realize the true boundaries.

Example - Thou shall not kill - it's not OK to hack someone's arm off as long as they live. It means don't be unnecessarily violent up to and including murder.

More than one reason, but number one was "a schoolmaster to lead us to Christ".. Christians are no longer under a schoolmaster because we are new creatures. "The law is for the lawless". This is why it bothers me when Christians and preachers say and preach the law to believers. The law is for non believers. It takes faith to believe we are new creatures and do not need moral law any more, but aren't we supposed to live by faith?

To be religious to God, and to become respectful, of man's creation and life. Remember this happening was before Jesus came to this world, perhaps that was God best way to protect the good of creation and prepare the way for his Son to become to teach us, politics and not to save us, from politics????.

Because our deeds will be accounted for on the day of judgement.

Faith alone will not suffice.

Faith without Good deeds (obediance to the commands of God) is worthless.

Good deeds without faith are misguided.
