Right click on the taskbar, go to "toolbars" and click on "Quick Launch".
If that doesn't work, do that step again. Right click on the taskbar and make sure "lock the taskbar" is not selected. There should be a small line or a line of dots to the right of the start button. Click on it and drag it to the right until you see the icons you want.

Sounds like you have just lost your Quick Launch.
Right click the Start Bar, go to Toolbars and Quic Launch and they should reappear.
If they do not then the Quick Launch has lost the shortcuts, so you will need to find the explorer and Internet Items and drag them into the Quick Launch.

Those are "Quick Launch" icons, and more than likely you have more than 4 quick launch icons. They end up disappearing. But on the right of the quick launch area, you'll see >>. If you click on that, a list of your quick launch icons will appear.
To get your little desktop icon to show up next to the start button again, just click on it and drag it onto the taskbar.
And if you don't want certain programs on your quick launch area, just right-click them and go to delete.

As already pointed out, it may just be that your Quick Launch Tool bar is turned off. If not, you can manually recreate the icon yourself.
