It's gonna be a long time til I get true HD in any form (blu-ray, HD dvd or HD cable) I was wondering if the use of a digital line doubler would be worth it on a 720p DLP projector or is the native resolution (1280X720) about as clean as I can get it with a 480 progressive scan dvd? A digital line doubler as opposed to those generic analog ones where they just convert the signals to a higher HZ frequency.

Using an external video processor is a great idea. I personally would recommend the following:

Reason being the image processing in the faroudja unit is going to upscale not down scale a image to full 720p resolution all the time.

I always use video processors and am always happy with them.

You should really think of getting a cheap up converting DVD player if your going to buy a line doubler. Last time I checked, a decent up converting DVD player like Samsung started around less than $100 and cheapo Taiwanese up converting DVD player were $40 on priceguide. Actually while on the suboject of 720P. I actually did three tests for my 720P DLP projector.
1) Use my computer's VGA output and run a DVD software to produce 720P signal.
2) Covert my xbox with mod chip and enable the 720P with component to VGA adapter.
3) Bought a up converting DVD player that produces 720P.

My final conclusion. No visible difference in quality (color reproduction, hue, saturation, distortion) to the naked eye can perceive. I haven't tried the line double but if it output 720P, I have strong suspecion the quality won't be that much different from 1 or 2 or 3.

Your "line doubler" could merely make it easier to out on fabric that's no longer already hi-Def...Your DVD participant (until eventually it upscales), your VCR or analog broadcast television. Your HDTV sign, Blu-ray disc participant or XBOX 360 does no longer strengthen with a "line doubler" added...yet he's precise, your projector has one outfitted into it already.

Everyone's steering you right so far...But you might try a "Terrestrial Broadcast HD box"...Just hook your "rabbit ears" to it...Most metropolitan areas have over 30 free HD channels...All from over-the-air broadcasts.

Great free HD content...Check on eBay for a used one...They go for $50 or less...We love ours so much we don't have cable or satellite...Netflix fills the gaps nicely...Click this link for some more HDTV truths: http://www.avtruths.com/hdtv.html
