If someone has overdosed - what is the best way to prevent them from vomitting?

You should NOT attempt to induce vomiting WITHOUT approval of a physician or poison control center. Anyone who has overdosed should immediately be taken to an ER.

If the person vomits on their own (this will happen sometimes), clear their mouth and make sure their airway is not obstructed.

Call 911.

It all depends on what they overdosed on. Some things you don't want them to vomit and other things you do. I would find out what the person overdosed on, how much they ingested, if they have eaten anything else in the last few hours, and their body weight... then I would call poison control to ask them what should be done for the person you are trying to help. They will know which substances need to be vomitted up and which ones shouldn't.

Call the Poison Control Hotline at 1-800-222-1222 or go on-line to www.1-800-222-1222.info . The question really doesn't provide enough information, since you don't state what the overdose was. There are times when you DO and other times when you DO NOT want to induce vomiting. Someone on the hotline can help without passing judgment.

Vomiting is the body's way of ridding itself of poison. Therefore, trying to prevent vomiting is really a bad thing to do if someone has been poisoned, i.e. via overdose of a drug.

Unless you know they swallowed something caustic - bleach, etc - _let them vomit_ and keep them in a position where they won't aspirate (inhale) the vomit afterwards.

Calling 911 or your local emergency number, and poison control, and providing all relevent details will get you the most situationally accurate information. Poisonings aren't one-size-fits all.

Vomiting is your best bet but I would definetely take them to the hospital. They may need their stomach pumped.

Unless your trying to kill this person....make sure he DOES vomit the pills out of his system. A hospital will give them charcoal to MAKE them vomit.....Gotta get it out.

Call poison control. Your local number is in the front of the phone book. Tell them what the person took, and they will tell you what to do.
