THe proper way to brush is called the MODIFIED STILLMAN'S method.

This is widely excepted as the most effective measure for the removal of plaque around the gumline, this area being the most significant in the control of early and advanced gum disease.

Floss first! Flossing first help remove the plaque bacteria that hide between your teeth, and brushing second helps to remove this bacteria from your mouth.

Direct the brush towards the roots of the teeth at a 45º angle. Press lightly and then gently, with quick and gentle movement, flick the brush down in one sweeping motion. Continue this around the top and bottom teeth, overlapping teeth as you brush. Do this along the lingual (inside, tongue side or backside of your teeth) surfaces of your teeth. When you get to lingual parts of your front top and bottom teeth, turn your brush so that it is vertical in your hand, and flick outward toward your bathroom mirror, and upward for the bottom teeth.

The bitting edge, or occlusal surface, of your teeth is done with tiny circular motions to remove plaque from the grooves of your teeth. NEVER SCRUB YOUR TEETH OR GUMS!! Scrubbing leads to irritation and recession of your gums, and can damage your teeth, making them sensitive.

Your tongue should never be forgotten. Put your brush at the back or base of your tongue and brush straight dowm to the tip. Do this about 4-5 times. NEVER SCRUB YOUR TONGUE! It could damage the tiny bumps on your tongue.

Hope this help!

Up and down between the teeth and with circular motion on the teeth. Brush inside the teeth, on the top, and your tongue as well. You should also try brushing machine. They work best even if you feel a little lazy. You will find that your breath improves in the morning, your teeth shinier and less plague. That and flossing, your teeth and your gum will be happy for a long long time.

Anything but accross, like most of us do. At my last dental appt. it was suggested that I try brushing with my left hand in order to slow down, and think of what direction my brush is going. I have horrible creases and indentations across my gum line where through the years the bristles of my tooth brush have carved a grand canyon there...

Hello--Great question

I have included several sites for you to visit and study the step by step guides available to you on-line.

I have also included a general dental care site for other related topics that might interest you and also a site for the people that have conventional metal braces and need help with how to best brush their teeth.

Happy brushing and keep smiling.

Have an awesome day!

Start with a sonic tooth brush. My dentist is very up on things
and started me on one about 2 years ago. My tooth brush has 3 stages and changes to each one. It assures that you
brush long enough, then it has a massager. Just make sure
you cover every area of your mouth.

applying the recommended amount of toothpaste to your brush you are suppose to brush from the back of the mouth up. Using circular motions you are to brush the lower, upper back and front of all your teeth. You are suppose to brush your teeth for up to one minute.

good luck!
