using a digital video camcorder is a bad idea. miniDV needs to shoot at least 5 seconds per run, thats 150 frames which you will have to edit down to 2 or 3 depending on if you are doing double or triple shot animation. HDV and DVD recorders use MP2 compression so that you cannot edit frame by frame. Your best bet is to put a regular digital still camera on the copystand, then paste the individual shots together in the computer.

very high end broadcast grade analog video recorders (not camcorders) were used at one time to record animations using frame accurate edit controllers, but they would wear out quickly both the heads and the tape. not really an option with digital which has even faster wear rates.
