No that I would do that, just wondered.

And what speed would kitty be doing when she / he connected?

Yes I love cats and all that but what I am looking for is an good estimation of kittys speed when hitting the deck.

It's for a project I am working on. Can a cat reach terminal velocity?

Why don't you check with a physics professor, if it's only an academic question the rate of speed based on the height and weight of the animal can be calculated. As for landing on it's feet -- I hope you never find out 'cause feet or no the cat would be seriously injured at the least.

I own 6 cats, the mother climbed a high tree because a dog scared her so bad she found away up that tree. She's declawed by the way.
I was scared she would get hurt and called the fire dept. When they got there the ladder scared her and she jumped about 15 feet down and landed on her feet.
I am not sure if a cat would make it 13 floors. But, you never know. I will say the thought of my cat up 15 feet scared me something pretty bad. Cats are amazing and will definitly amaze you at what they are capable of doing!
I hope you don't do this to a animal. That would what I called a sick human! :)

Why do you want to know this? There are cats who have fallen from great heights and survived but the details are deliberately kept secret to avoid the possibility of people deliberately throwing cats off highrise buildings in order to claim a record!

A cat's instinct makes it turn to land on its feet when falling but even if it lands on its feet, if its velocity is too high when it meets the ground it could die or be horribly injured.

I assume you are NOT going to try this because that would be cruel and heinous.

However, if a cat falls from a higher height, they actually have a better chance of landing on their feet. The longer the distance to fall, the more time they have to "right" themselves into the proper position. There have been cases were cat's have fallen out of higher building windows, and have survived. The shorter the distance, the more likely they are to land on their backs, or in other awkward positions.

I have no idea about the speed. And I'm not going to try and find out.

Hold on, I'll check it out and get back to you. Speed readings may not be accurate though.....

Edit: Ok despite the fact that kitty bounced off the mirrored glass windows several times, she managed to rectify her rapid descent and landed the right way up. It's innaccurate to say she landed on her feet as she landed like a ragdoll or a pillow with onions inside. 118mph is what her speedometer said but fortunately there were no coppers around to give her a ticket.

No, not really you weeble.

This is an odd question. Why a cat? Why not an inanimate object of roughly the same weight?

BTW for a start, it is not true that cats always land on their feet and, in any event, it wouldn't matter what part of its body it landed on - the poor thing would be dead being dropped from that height!

I have heard that if you threw a cat out of a multi storey building it would fall 6 floors before the cat could correct its postion so its the right way up ready for landing so it has a higher chance of survivving it falls out of the 30th floor than it does if it falls out of the 9th floor.

I dont know if this is true though lol just what I have heard!

Nah, if the cat has time to panic it doesn't work. Why would you want to know this anyway? Are you some kind of cat hating freak? Be nice to the Kitties, they ask for so little and give so much!

a group of teens did this in birmingham a couple of years ago and filmed it for a laff - they kept repeating there little experiment the cat survived the several drops it got but had to be put down later (as they should have been) instead they got off lightly with suspended sentences & i think one recieved a short sentence- to even consider this you need to get some help
