It is def NOT uncommon or inappropriate. It all depends on how you were it. If it is pretty an elegant great. If you have a black veil on with it...prob a mistake. I wore a black dress to my friends wedding and got nothing but great comments on it even from the bride.

I go to at least 5-6 weddings every year, and I see people wearing black all the time.

The concept of black as inappropriate for a wedding went out the window the moment the first bridesmaids wore black dresses. Wearing black is acceptable for weddings, especially for evening weddings, so long as the clothing is otherwise appropriate. The classic little black dress is fine, skintight black leather pants and a tube top are not.
I wouldn't dress in all black, but pairing a black dress with colorful accessories and nice jewelry, or a black suit with a colorful blouse and accessories is perfectly fine.

I'd say no. When my mom remarried (not my biological father, mind you) I wore a black dress to her wedding. It was fine. She thinks the pictures look weird because my step-brothers are in tan and green and then there I am in a black dress but I don't care. I think it's fine.

You could ask the bride and groom if it would bother them. If it doesn't, then go for it!
That way if anyone gets snooty about it you can state that you asked the bride and groom their opinion, and if they do not like it, they can talk to the guests of honor!
If they seem a little put off by it then I wouldn't wear it.

It depends on what time of day the wedding is. TYpically, an evening wedding is more formal, and then, yes, it is ok to wear a tasteful black dress. You can always freshen it up with a colorful scarf around your neck, a colorful shawl, or a suit jacket.

Absolutely not. As a matter of fact, every wedding that I've gone too, with the exception of bride's maids dresses, I've worn a black dress. You should never wear white!!! :)

I think its regional. Where I am at in the North East its rare to see women not wearing black to weddings, but in other parts of the country black is strictly taboo. You have to look at weddings that you have been to in the past, have women worn black? If so you are probably safe wearing it, if not, then steer clear. However, if you are still unsure, its is always best to err to the side of caution and in this case that would be to not wear a black dress.
