She growls when we pick her up and sometimes petting her. I just don't want this to get out of hand.

Yes, sometimes hormonal fluctuations cause mood swings. Just like women.

Spaying will help the problem.

It's possible that she is feeling a little nasty while in heat.. I find them to be softer and sweeter rather than
nasty but different breeds, different dogs can behave in other ways... You should have her spayed. When she growls don't react with fear or nervousness.. It will only encourage the behaviour, and don't immediately give her what she wants.
Reprimand her for the behaviour, tell her NO, and don't let her get away with it. If she is nasty while in heat you don't want to breed her.. You should get her spayed.

dogs in heat don't like to be touched or even bothered most of the time. If this is the first time she has been in heat it's new for her too. She is cranky and really just doesn't want to be bothered so I really wouldn't worry until after she is out of heat and still doing this. She should be just fine just give her, her space.

It might cost a bit more, but you should go ahead and get your dog spayed unless you want puppies.

Unfortunately, some female dogs do get behavior problems when in heat. Unless they are very well trained indeed.

She won't like getting picked up. Mine will run away if we touch her anywhere near her lower back. The only thing you can do is reward calm behaviour with trets and see how it goes. I wouldn't want to pick up a dog on heat anyway.
